Sr. Director, Community Engagement @PBS

The Community Engagement initiative will focus on helping member stations, individually and as groups, develop and implement community engagement projects.

JOB OBJECTIVE:

A network of vibrant, thriving member stations across the country is the foundation of a healthy public broadcasting system. PBS and our member stations are all interconnected and reliant on one another for success, which hinges on our ability to meet the needs of the communities we serve. PBS Station Services is committed to carrying out three interrelated initiatives - focused specifically on Community Engagement, Organizational Capacity and Station Leadership Development – that are viewed as critical to increasing member station effectiveness.
 
The Community Engagement initiative will focus on helping member stations, individually and as groups, develop and implement community engagement projects. This initiative directly supports the goals of the PBS Strategic Plan to create larger, more engaged audiences, more diverse revenue streams, and strengthened vitality in local communities through a deeper collaboration between PBS and its member stations. 
 
The Sr. Director, Community Engagement will lead this initiative, working directly with member stations, cross-departmental teams at PBS and national organizations (such as Corporation for Public Broadcasting and National Public Radio).
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Develop strategic action plan and goals for initiative in collaboration with PBS member station and community stakeholders;
  • Work with CPB, NPR, and other public media partners to ensure the initiative is coordinated and implemented timely and successfully;
  • Lead the cross-departmental PBS teams to coordinate optimal deployment of PBS resources to support station engagement efforts;
  • Identify, collaborate and work with PBS member stations, individually and as groups, to develop and implement community engagement projects at individual member stations and/or groups of member stations;
  • Organize and lead annual PBS Engagement Summit;
  • Lead workshops to share best practices on community engagement;
  • Manage development of case studies of community engagement initiatives for system-wide circulation;
  • Participate in PBS Regional Meetings, trainings and annual conferences, including representing PBS at local station events and community gatherings;
  • Monitor and evaluate community organizing programs, practices, and initiatives to ensure quality and effectiveness, making recommendations for improvement as needed;
  • Effectively align program staff and station support and operations with the long-term goals and expectations of the member stations and communities;
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • 4+ years’ experience as Lead Community Organizer;
  • 8+ years of progressive management experience in community organizing;
  • Demonstrated experience and success developing and executing community; engagement action plans;
  • Prior work in a non-profit environment helpful.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  • Graduate work desirable.
SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Expert knowledge of the community organizing landscape;
  • Superior project management skills;
  • Excellent communications skills – verbal, written and presentation;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to apply creative and critical thinking, along with subject matter expertise to develop new programs and improve/expand on existing programs;
  • Ability to successfully deliver on key organizational imperatives by working effectively across departments and with multiple internal/external stakeholders;
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a keen ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure;
  • Strong commitment to valuing diversity and embracing inclusion;
  • Entrepreneurial, willing to experiment and take risks;
  • Attention to detail and pride in high-quality execution of work;
