The Latino Lens Workshop Series: Industry Fundamentals is a series of weekly webinars to prepare current and aspiring industry professionals in developing the fundamentals of the business of media and entertainment through engaging lessons, connecting with industry professionals in various aspects of the agencies, management companies, and building a network of diverse executives. NALIP’s talent development program will provide individuals with the training, resources, and support they need to achieve long-term success in the industry. 

Topics that will be included in the workshop series are below, but not limited to: Industry Ecosystem 101, the history of agencies, management companies, competitive workforce skills, emotional intelligence, business of representation, state of the industry & trends, and financing.

Workshops run twice weekly for 10 weeks from May through July through virtual webinars. This workshop is nightly, Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm.

As part of our Latino Lens Workshop Series, we are proud to present the first in a series of online webinars, an insider's guide into NALIP's programs. We will discuss the wide array of programs and opportunities NALIP hosts for content creators such as our Media Summit, the Latino Media Market, the Latino Media Festival, the Diverse Women in Media Forum, as well as our different incubator programs, and some of our exciting partnerships including CineSony Voces Nuevas. We will be joined by successful NALIP alumni such as Alejandra Lopez (CineSony), Nickolas Duarte (Latino Media Market and Latino Lens), Miguel Berg (Latino Media Market), Alvaro Ron, Carla Dauden (Latino Lens Incubator), Rebecca Murga (NALIP Grant Recipient), Erick Castrillon (Latino Media Market and Latino Lens) and Esteban Arango (Latino Media Market). who will share how their experience with NALIP served as a stepping stone in their careers.

Alejandra Lopez 

Originally from Puerto Rico, Alejandra is now based in Los Angeles working as a staff writer on the third season of Sony Crackle/Amazon's original series "Startup.” Alejandra was the grand prize winner of Voces Nuevas - a Cine Sony Short Film Contest, the first annual short film contest for aspiring filmmakers produced by Cine Sony and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers.

Nickolas Duarte

Nickolas Duarte is a writer/director and the founder of Crown Chimp. He is also a two-time NALIP fellowship recipient, a National Endowment of the Arts recipient, a fellow in Ryan Murphy’s Half Initiative television directing program, and is developing a crime drama with WB’s Stage 13 platform.

Miguel Berg

Miguel Berg is an aspiring Latinx executive and creative. He earned his Bachelors in Media Arts at University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Art & Design where he helped establish the campus’ television network that now reaches over 100,000 viewers. In 2017, Miguel was selected as a NALIP Latino Media Market Fellow for his sci-fi adventure thriller feature film, Aurora. He now works as the first Development & Production Administrator at Stage 13, Warner Bros.

Alvaro Ron 

Alvaro Ron is a graduate of UCLA, a Berlinale Talents Alumni, and a member of NALIP and the Producers Guild of America (PGA). He has written, directed and produced numerous award-winning films around the world. His latest film “Swimming in the Desert” was part of the Latino Lens Shorts Narrative Incubator. The film was Academy Award Qualified and won a total of 28 International awards.

Carla Dauden 

Carla Dauden is a Brazilian director based in LA. She has written and directed short films, commercials, documentaries and music videos, having screened her work in major festivals around the world. In 2018, she was selected by NALIP’s Latino Lens Incubator to direct her short film “The Jump,” released by PBS the following year.

Rebecca Murga

Rebecca Murga is a Chicago-born, Latinx filmmaker. In 2015, she was the recipient of several grants including the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) grant announced at Sundance. She’s currently the Director of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW), a hands-on training program committed to increasing the number of women and gender non-binary artists working professionally.

Erick Castrillon

Castrillon is a Colombian-American screenwriter and film director of commercial stories about irreverent and diverse characters. He’s a USC Trojan and an alumnus of Film Independent’s Project Involve (2015), Fox Writers Lab (2017), and NALIP’s Latino Lens Incubator (2018). His feature film, Blast Beat, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition.

Esteban Arango

Esteban Arango is an award winning Colombian-American writer/director. He is a previous fellow of the Fox Global Directors Initiative (2016), Fox Writers Lab (2017), and NALIP’s Latino Media Market (2016). Blast Beat, Arango’s first feature film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition and was named by Variety as one of 10 Directors to Watch for 2020.

She's considered one of Mexico's and U.S.'s best & most versatile international actors, as well as an outstanding choreographer. This workshop will engage creators and performers alike, offering guidance on how to hone your craft in the entertainment industry and thrive as a creative

Veronica's Bio:

Veronica Falcon was born in Mexico City in 1966. Her career spans for almost three decades. She's considered one of Mexico's best & most versatile international actors, as well as an outstanding choreographer. In 2015 she moved to the US and within months she was cast as "Camila Vargas" the antagonist in the hit tv show “Queen of the South” the character became an iconic role and Ms Falcon’s career in the US was launched. She was cast in the first season of "Room 104" produced by the Duplass Brothers for HBO, then as "Clara" in Steven Conrad's critically acclaimed "Perpetual Grace Ltd." where she plays opposite to Sir Ben Kingsley & Luis Guzman. Soon we’ll be able to see her in Disney’s “Jungle Cruise next to Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt, the movie world premiere is set for Summer 2020.

Veronica is also a member of the cast of the new "Perry Mason" directed by Tim Van Patten (Game of Thrones, Sopranos) and produced by HBO. She just finished shooting the last installment of “The Purge”, and she is part of the cast of “The Starling” w Melissa McCarthy & “Voyagers” with Collin Farrell, both films will premiere next year as well. She is about to start shooting “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” for Marvel Studios. Aside from her acting career Ms. Falcon was a very successful choreographer, she was invited to work with Mexico’s National Opera Company several times, she has produced, directed and written several projects for theater and television and she has taught several workshops, master classes and conferences discussing in Mexico and abroad. Ms. Falcon was awarded the Impact award given by the NHMC, she was nominated for a “Silver Goddess Award” and twice for the “Image award”.

NALIP is proud to present the next installment of our Latino Lens Workshop Series: As Seen on TV with Nick Duarte! Nick is an Emmy-award winning commercial, film, and series writer/director, as well as founder of Crown Chimp Productions. Join us as Nick gives insight into what it took to direct commercials for major brands like Nike, Adidas, BMW, the NFL, the NBA, and Charles Schwab. In this workshop, Nick will share what a career in commercial directing can offer filmmakers, how to construct an effective commercial concept, and converse with guest speakers in different arenas of the field to provide attendees with the knowledge they need to succeed.

 

Nick’s Bio:

 

Nickolas Duarte is a film, commercial and series writer/director. He runs the production company Crown Chimp and is represented for ad work by Derby Content. As a commercial director, Nickolas has earned over 70 industry awards including a National Addy, an Emmy, 6 National Tellys, and 3 National Communicator awards. He was inducted into the AAFT Advertising Hall of Fame as the 2017 Next Generation Award winner. His scripted and documentary work has played in festivals to international acclaim, and has been described by Short of The Week as “almost as much a physical viewing experience as an emotionally affecting one.”  He is a two-time NALIP Fellowship Recipient and a Latino Lens Narrative Shorts Incubator Fellow. He is currently co-writing and directing a crime drama for Warner Bros.

In this workshop, Marcos will help filmmakers see themselves as a business and cover the technical aspects of storytelling that are often neglected in rising creators.

 

Marcos’ Bio:

Marcos Cline-Márquez is a prolific producer who daily finds himself pushing the limits of creativity in a data driven world. In 2012 he founded Altered.LA , a production company known as a creative hub of passionate storytellers, directors, producers and content creators. It is through Altered.LA that Marcos has developed and produced content ranging from:

The success of his work has led him to be recognized as a leader in US Hispanic Advertising, but it is his passion and innovation which has led to that success.

NALIP's Latino Lens Workshop Series presents "Last Looks with Nino Alicea." This workshop focuses on finding the synergies between Art Department and storytelling. Nino has been the creative force behind the NALIP Media Summit, bringing his Latinx touch to the Hollywood & Highland and assisting with NALIP’s Latino Lens Incubator filmmakers bring their worlds to life.

Often times a content creator will struggle with conceptualizing a tangible story world that is within their means of creation. The goal of this workshop will be to bridge the wants and possibilities of any creative team to achieve the best look for their project. What are the qualities of an effective production designer? How can one get that blockbuster look while fitting in budget? This workshop is a perfect fit for both filmmakers and artists alike who want to fortify their skills in materializing their visions.

NALIP's Latino Lens Workshop Series presents "Building the Perfect Frame with Joel Novoa." 
To capture a perfect moment on film, there must be an extraordinary synergy between director, camera and subject. Director Joel Novoa (CW’s Arrow and God’s Slave) will dive into the process communicating one’s creative vision amongst collaborators. 

This hands on workshop is an excellent opportunity for filmmakers to take their work to the next level by becoming a more effective content creator on set. In this unique workshop, we are opening up submissions from attendees for original scenes to be blocked, rehearsed and tuned by you and Joel. If you would like to have an original scene of yours to be considered for dissection, please submit a sample script below.

Joel’s Bio:

Joel Novoa was born in New York, but grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. He holds a Law Degree and a MFA in Directing from American Film Institute. Joel Directed GOD´S SLAVE at the age of twenty-four. The feature was filmed in four different countries in South America. The movie received worldwide theatrical release and then Netflix deal. Since its tour of the festival circuit, the ​film has won 18 international awards and has been included in more than 75 festival official selections.

Joel recently directed three ARROW episodes for DC Comics and Warner Brothers.

Joel is the recipient of the prestigious Franklin J. Schaffner Fellow Award 2012 for his contributions as a director, the Caucus Foundation Award 2012 and the Deluxe merit for best director 2011. Joel teamed up with Sally Hibbin for the film “I.D2: Shadwell Army”, sequel to the prestigious British hooligan film “I.D”, starred by Linus Roache. Premiered in 25 screens across U.K.

Joel´s short film slate include MACHSOM was selected as one of five DGA Showcase finalists. It has competed at nearly well over sixty festivals, including AFI Fest. It won the special Jury Prize at the Bermuda International Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at The Beijing Film Festival, The Audience Award at the Boston Film Festival and The Jury Prize at the Irvine International Film Festival amongst others. Joel also directed four Short Films with selections and honors in more than thirty film festivals, including Cannes Film Festival.

In 2016 Joel directed “Day of Reckoning” for Universal, being one of the year´s top gross films for Syfy Channel. The film has worldwide theatrical and TV deal with Universal.
