San Diego State University - Assistant Professor - Independent Narrative Filmmaking

The Television, Film and New Media Program within the School of Theatre, Television and Film at San Diego State University is seeking a dynamic faculty member to teach independent narrative filmmaking. The ideal candidate would be a future-looking writer-director in moving image narrative who will advance our commitment to independent storytelling and whose creative activity reflects a high level of craft. This new tenure track faculty member would lead students by the example of their own creative activity and would offer strong writing/directing skills to support and expand our curriculum.

The Television, Film and New Media area is part of the School of Theater, Television and Film. Our location in San Diego places us in a growing and thriving creative community where we are a driving force in narrative and documentary production. The program emphasizes the work of the independent filmmaker, integrating theory with hands-on practice. We offer an MFA in Film and Television Production and two undergraduate degrees, a BS emphasis in Production and a BS emphasis in Critical Studies. 

Candidates must have a terminal degree in filmmaking or an associated area, have at least three years of professional experience, and show evidence of filmmaking productivity. Applicants will submit an introductory letter of interest, intent, and teaching philosophy, A current CV, a resume of professional experience, a portfolio of creative work including at least 3 links to films written, directed, or produced by the applicant, a diversity statement, and contact information for 4 professional references.

We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the university or film production field, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into filmmaking practice, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to filmmaking practice that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. This is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position. Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. Appointment begins fall semester 2022.
