HBO Max & WarnerMedia OneFifty To Expand Latino Short Film Competition

HBO Max and WarnerMedia OneFifty are partnering with the Georgia Latino Film Festival, the Houston Latino Film Festival, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, the Miami Film Festival, the New York Latino Film Festival and the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival to expand their annual Latino Short Film Competition, with submissions now open. The deadline to submit will be on May 2nd.

Bad Robot & The Black List To Bolster Underrepresented Writers Through New Partnership
J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is partnering with The Black List on a new initiative that will provide 500 writers from historically underrepresented communities with access to the Black List website, offering them the opportunity to receive feedback on their original work that they might not otherwise be able to acquire.
Participating talent will have access not only to one free month of hosting on the site, but also to one free professional screenplay evaluation. Bad Robot will work with community organizations, including Arts in the Armed Forces, Barcid Foundation, The Blackhouse Foundation, Gold House, The Latinx House, Outfest/Outfest Fusion, RespectAbility and Women in Film to distribute 400 of the website fee waivers directly to writers, with The Black List distributing the other 100 to scribes who are already a part of the blcklst.com ecosystem.

Netflix, Shondaland, The Latinx House and Sundance Institute Team for Filmmaker Fellowship (Exclusive)
Netflix, Shondaland, The Latinx House and the Sundance Institute’s Women at Sundance program announced a joint partnership Wednesday, teaming for a new program that will give Latina and nonbinary Latinx directors hands-on entertainment industry experience and connections. The Adelante Directors Fellowship will be a yearlong program supporting the selected directors’ professional development and creating a pipeline to support independent filmmakers throughout their careers.

AAFCA Announces 2022 Special Achievement Honorees (EXCLUSIVE)

The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) announced the recipients of their special achievement honors — “Attica” filmmakers Stanley Nelson and Traci A. Curry; producer and Hidden Empire Film Group co-founder Roxanne Avent-Taylor; Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning composer Terence Blanchard; John Gibson, the Motion Picture Association’s VP of external and multicultural affairs; and Sony Motion Picture Group.

Sundance Institute & Adobe Launch 2022 Short Film Challenge

The Sundance Institute and Adobe said Monday that their 2022 Sundance Ignite x Adobe Short Film Challenge, aimed at emerging narrative and documentary filmmakers ages 18 to 25 looking to take their careers to the next level, will run from February 14-March 14.
Those interested in a year-long Sundance Ignite x Adobe Fellowship, offering access to mentorships, resources and the chance to attend the 2023 Sundance Film Festival as part of 2022’s cohort of 10, can submit their short films by uploading them to the Sundance Institute’s digital platform, Sundance Collab. Those chosen as fellows will also receive a $2,000 artist grant and complimentary membership to Adobe Creative Cloud.

GLAAD finds LGBTQ representation on TV at an all-time high

GLAAD's annual Where We Are on TV report found a record number of LGBTQ characters in the 2021/2022 broadcast television season. The full report examined characters across broadcast, cable, and streaming, with the first-time inclusion of Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, and HBO Max.
On-screen representation is nothing if not a series of small victories. In addition to record high LGBTQ representation overall, GLAAD's research found that the majority of LGBTQ characters on broadcast and cable television were lesbians — for the first time ever.

Charlamagne Tha God, Alesha Renee to Host 2022 AAFCA Awards (Exclusive)

Charlamagne Tha God (The Breakfast Club) and Alesha Reneé (The Rich & the Ruthless) will host the 13th AAFCA Awards on March 2, the African-American Film Critics Association announced on Wednesday.
The in-person awards show will mark its first live gathering since 2020. The AAFCA will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2023.

XYZ Films Acquires Rights To Upcoming SXSW Midnighters Pic ‘Hypochondriac’ Starring Zach Villa & More

XYZ Films has acquired North American rights to the LGBTQ horror-thriller Hypochondriac, starring Zach Villa (American Horror Story), Devon Graye (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore), Madeline Zima (Californication), Chris Doubek (Boyhood), Marlene Forte (Knives Out) and Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), ahead of its world premiere in the Midnighters section of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival on March 14. The indie studio’s domestic distribution division has slated the film for a nationwide release in theaters and on digital later this year.

Issa Rae To Receive Producers Guild’s Visionary Award

Issa Rae, the award-winning actress, producer, writer and director, will be this year’s recipient of the Producers Guild’s Visionary Award, which honors those “who share inspiring, uplifting stories that add unique value to society and culture.” It will be presented to her in person at the 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards on March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

The WIA Scholarship Program is an annual award committed to furthering deserving animation students who demonstrate artistic talent, a passion for animation, a financial need, and a promising future in the field of animation. Student members of WIA were encouraged to apply, no matter in what region of the world they are academically pursuing their animation career interests.
