Donald Trump’s insurgent campaign will likely go down in history as one of the United States’ darker moments. Yet rather than simply sweeping him under the rug before the rest of the world could catch wind of his fuming racist drivel, the media has apparently developed a morbid fascination with his jerky hand movements, constipated facial expressions, and schoolyard bully attitude. Indeed, the only thing more painful than watching the man stumble his way through policy arguments is seeing him have the chance to play the reasonable politician on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, or the self-conscious funnyman on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Well, now it seems the media’s free publicity train has gone a stop too far, because Trump has been tapped to host an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live. To be clear, we’re not talking about a 10-minute interview, or a brief breaking headline about his campaign, we’re talking about 93 minutes of smiling, waving, and making jokes on one of America’s biggest stages. So who better to call out NBC and SNL Executive Producer Lorne Michaels for their opportunistic and ethically dubious choice than Chi-Rican Congressman and inveterate defender of Latino rights Luis Gutiérrez?

  • New HBO special "The Latin Explosion: A New America"

We’ve already established that Tommy Mottola is a top candidate for honorary Latino status. As the record mogul behind pop music’s great Latin invasion of the 1990s, the man’s done more for Latino visibility in the mainstream in 20 years than just about any Hollywood studio exec, ever. Plus he’s married to Thalía, so he’s got a front row seat to the joys of Latin American-style telenovela romance.

Now whether he’s driven by a genuine passion for Latin culture or merely an astute business sense – or a little of both – Mr. Mottola won’t stop cranking out the Latino love. His new HBO special The Latin Explosion: A New America was announced a few months back as an exploration of the influence of Latino music on the U.S. mainstream, but the documentary’s brand new official trailer gives us a slightly different story.

Salma Hayek Pinault gave a stirring speech at Variety‘s Power of Women luncheon on Friday at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons.

Hayek recalled fearing the move from Mexico to Hollywood only to be pleasely surprised by the women she found surrounded with in the industry.

Hayek Pinault dedicated the majority of the speech to the Hollywood gender gap. “They cannot ignore us anymore,” she said.

“We are the generation that said, ‘We’re not going away at 30,'” she said to uproarious applause.

Hayek Pinault co-founded Chime for Change with Beyonce and international fashion powerhouse Gucci in 2013.

“In only two years … we have affected 3 million families and communities,” she said.

The campaign supports nongovernmental agencies with the mission of empowering women and girls around the world through initiatives focused on education, health and justice. Chime for Change has so far raised $7.3 million with 153 nonprofit partners to fund projects in 88 countries, benefiting 400,000 women and girls.

She said Chime for Change is launching a new initiative called Chime for the Children of Syria. “We are experiencing the biggest refuge crisis since the Second World War,” she said.

“We are a fantastic generation,” she added. “I could not have made it without the women who gave me the strength today. For all of you who don’t know what Chime for Change is, it is a call for everyone to use social media for social justice.”

Women represent 50% of the population and 66% of the work force, but “only get 10% of the income of the world.

“This is really really sad and tragic,” she said. “In the 20 years I have been an activist for women. I can smell the airs of change. Especially in this industry for the first time.”

“These romantic comedies are not working anymore. Why? We changed!,” she said as the crowd clapped. “I think that this is the true part of equality. Not only we can make us March but when we can speak as loud and really have the freedom to be ourselves.”

This is your opportunity to tell us your creative ideas for groundbreaking video projects on privilege. You can enter by yourself or with a friend, and if we pick your idea, it'll be produced by MTV!

In support of the film, MTV and Look Different are looking for emerging filmmakers to create groundbreaking video project for the campaign that would bring a creative new outlook to the subject of privilege as it relates to the filmmaker in today's world. Possible subjects could include racial, gender and sexual orientation privilege, among others. Privilege is not something that people necessarily do, create or take advantage of on purpose. Being in a dominant group often leads to certain advantages that most people aren't even aware they have. The video projects selected would shine a light on these privileges to help create awareness, build empathy and propel action.

    Film Reporter@krolljvar

Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has abruptly exited Will Smith’s drama “Collateral Beauty” over creative differences.

Sources tell Variety that Gomez-Rejon felt as though he was directing an entirely different project than the one he had signed up for.

Smith is still attached to star in the New Line film, which was supposed to start production next month. Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Bard Darros are producing along with screenwriter Allan Loeb, while PalmStar CEO Kevin Frakes and Anthony Bregman are exec producing.

The story follows a New York advertising exec (Smith) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. His colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, which ends up backfiring. PalmStar and Likely Story acquired the rights to the script in June, with PalmStar fully financing.

Hugh Jackman was Rooney Mara were also attached to the project at one time.

As for Gomez-Rejon, the “Me and the Earl and the Dying Girl” helmer still has a slew of projects to choose from after recently signing on to develop “The Current War” at the Weinstein Co., starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal. He is also set to helm “A Foreigner” at Paramount.

He is repped by WME. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
