Woodpeckers (Carpinteros) by José María Cabral, Award Recipient for the 2017 Latino Media Fest - Best Latin American Film - received praise from The New York Times. The N.Y. Times points to poignant cinematography that parallel the film's claustrophobia and the perfect chemistry between the film's characters. Writer Andy Websiter accurately represents as such as "the lean handsomeness and quiet authority of Mr. Jean is a perfect complement to Ms. Rodríguez’s passionate Yanelly."

José María Cabral will receive his award at the 2017 Latino Media Fest for his film, Woodpeckers, and you can pick up your pass here.

3 Movies That Update the Immigrant Narrative in Film

3 Movies That Update the Immigrant Narrative in Film

Hermia & Helena by Matías Piñeiro is an updated adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream following Camila (Agustina Muñoz) arriving in New York.

Remezcla's Manuel Betancourt says it best:

"...Hermia & Helena points to a kind of immigrant story that feels all too slight to be even labeled as one. But in its interest in translation and cultural exchange, Piñeiro is pointing to a new kind of transnational movie only made possible by new modes of film funding and production – this isn’t quite an American film, and not quite a Latin American film, but something, somewhere in between."

Guillermo del Toro just presented his latest film, "Shape of Water," at the Venice Film Fest and Telluride Film Festival this week. Variety praised the film, calling it "a ravishing, eccentric auteur's imagining, spilling artistry, empathy and sensuality from every open pore... this is incontestable del Toro's most rewarding, richly realized film -- or movie, for that matter..." And this shouldn't surprise anyone. Del Toro's work is renowned for its artistry and originality, but on top of that, this was a film year in the making.

While Sally Hawkins (Elisa) can recall as far back as four years ago that Guillermo wanted her for the lead (before the film was even written), Guillermo actually started planning this as a child. He told Variety that "as a kid, watching 'Frankenstein' ... I was always rooting for the monster." Hawkins wasn't the only one picked right from the beginning for her respective character. Doug Jones, the "gill-man," had met del Toro twenty-years prior and was told from the very beginning his anticipated role.

Gay Tejano Character Navigating Life In Upcoming ABC Series

Gay Tejano Character Navigating Life In Upcoming ABC Series

ABC is in talks to develop a series turning a known comedy trope -- man goes back home to live with his parents -- and adding a twist that is poignant as it is timely -- the man brings along his husband and son with his Mexican-American family in south Texas. As Refiner29 notes, a comedy centered on disagreeing with family "traditions" is especially relevant.

The narrative, it seems, is semi-autobiographical, as co-executive producer/writer Rob Sudduth also has a Latinx family and grew up in Texas, and now has a husband and son. While there will be direct references to his life are left to be seen.
