NALIP member Lorena Manriquez, an award-winning independent filmmaker and president of Andes Media, LLC, screened her film “Here I'll Stay,” at the New Orleans Film Festival this past weekend.
The New Orleans Film Festival (NOFF) is one of the largest film festivals in the South. NOFF took place on October 11th-19th at Ace Hotel in New Orleans, LA. It is one of the few film festivals that is Oscar-qualifying in all three Academy-accredited categories: Narrative Short, Documentary Short, and Animated Short. NALIP members Chris Valdes and Ted Griswold, who Co-Directed and Produced Olancho, screened their film at this year's New Orleans Film Festival. Olancho was part of NALIP's Latino Media Market as well as the Official Selection during the 2015 NALIP Media Summit.
Somos Productions, Boomdog TV, and Piñónlywood Studios are producing along with Endemol Shine Latino a new scripted drama series based on the popular Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. The series will be called "Súbete a Mi Moto - The History of Menudo", based off the title of one of their most popular hits from 1981, and will focus on the creation and rise of the popular band.
Following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, Hollywood has seemed to redeem itself with notable wins from Moonlight and Fences highlighting stories featuring African American lead actors and actresses. But the question is and still remains, is this enough representation? What about Latinx women? Afro Latinx? When it comes to true representation, Hollywood needs to look further into the spectrum of these identities within the Latino experience.
Fox International Productions has set Ale Damiani to direct Latino comedy Upgraded, a wish-fulfillment story written by Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman. Damiani made the sci-fi short-film M.A.M.O.N., a satirical critique of the U.S. president’s immigration policies that gained an international following after it was released last year (see the video below, featuring a robot Donald Trump).
Latin History for Morons: The Road to Broadway is a documentary in progress by filmmaker Ben DeJesus. The film captures John Leguizamo's quest to cram 3,000 years of history into 90 minutes of stage time as a one-man show. The road to his ultimate goal – his next Broadway hit, unfolds in a fun, intriguing, and poignant adventure that offers an intimate look into the journey of a passionate artist but also shines a light on the rarely-told stories of Latino heroes who made their mark on America.
