Final Call for Proposals for “Latino Lens Incubators: Beyond Graduation”

LOS ANGELES - The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and WORLD Channel announced a final call for proposals for the next series of Latino Lens Incubators: Beyond Graduation to award five grants to create digital video shorts. The deadline is December 3, 2017.

NALIP and WORLD Channel seek video proposals from content creators that tell compelling and insightful stories about students’ lives beyond high school graduation. Three documentary shorts (nonfiction/un-scripted) and two dramatic shorts (fiction/scripted) will receive production funds and post-production support provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Details about the application process are available at NALIP.org.

DGA Releases Report On Increase In Hiring Minority and Women Directors for TV Shows

The DGA has recently released a report titled, "DGA 2016-17 Episodic TV Director Diversity Report", which shows that ethnic and gender diversity is on an increasing trend. I the 2016-2017 TV season, The percentage of episodes directed by ethnic minorities rose by 3 percentage points to a record 22% of all episodes, while the percentage directed by women went up 4 points to 21% of all episodes, another all-time high. 

Breaking down out of all tv episodes, Caucasians (male and female) directed 78% of all episodes, African-Americans directed 13%, Asian-Americans directed 5%, and Latinos directed 4%.

Labo, Mexico's top facilities house specializing in digital and distribution services, will begin expanding its capabilities by producing Film TV content. The company also plans to expand internationally towards the US and Central America. 

Labo's first planned film is minority domestic co-production “Amor en cursivas,” a romantic comedy from Carlos Algara, co-director of psychological thriller “Veronica.” Labo will also lead produce an as-yet-untitled documentary about the human impact of the transition from 35mm film to digital.

Congressman Working with Emmys Head to Fix Latino Marginalization

Congressman, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), is taking notice that the lack of Latino representation in TV/ film is a problem that needs to be fixed. Hank Johnson, a co-chairman of the Congressional Caucus for Advancement of Studio, Talent, and Film Diversity said that there is a"glaring issue of Latino marginalization." He mentions that the problem does not start with the Emmy's, but with casting in a letter he wrote to Maury McIntyre, President, and COO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

HBO Will Debut '15: A Quinceañera Story' on Dec.19th

15: A Quinceañera Story, is a collection of four short documentary films, that HBO will air on Dec. 19th-22th, 2017. The short films will capture five Latina girls coming of age to celebrate their 15th birthday. These girls come from different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds from around the U.S., and one gets an inside look at their lives and their daily struggles as a Latina while preparing for the biggest day of their lives to date. HBO and HBO Latino will air these short docs on consecutive nights, starting December 19th. The shorts address gender identity and the constant fear of having a loved one deported. This show is just what the country needs, for people, outside of the Latino community, to see for themselves how some people are affected by the political climate of the country. It is a harsh reality, but a story that needs to be told.

Selena, the Mexican American iconic megastar of Tejano music, now has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Selena has been gone for 20 plus years now. She was shot to death on March 31, 1995, in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, but her music will live forever. She is still one of the most popular and influential Latina music icons the music industry has ever seen. When I think of Selena, I can instantly hear Selena’s voice in my head singing ‘Bidi, Bidi Bom Bom’. She will be missed, but never forgotten due to her getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

November 2nd Marks Latina Equal Pay Day

November 2nd is Latina Equal Pay Day. Today being during the 10th month of the year signifies how Latinas have to work a whole year plus 10 months to make the same amount that a white man makes in a year. 

Latinas are the lowest paid ethnic group compared to white men, ranking last behind Asian-American women, White women, Black women, and Native American Women. For every dollar a white man makes, Latinas make on average make 54 cents.

Telemundo is creating a new bilingual digital production studio called Fluency Plus. Fluency Plus’s vision is to create a mixture of Spanish and English content to tap into what marketers called the “200-percenters”, which are 100 percent Latino and 100 percent American.
