LOS ANGELES -With awards season kicking off with the Emmy’s in September and the Golden Globes earlier in January, the topic of diversity and inclusion has again resurfaced to permeate the conversations surrounding Hollywood; specifically its lack of representation at this season’s high profile award events. Coming from the previous break out moment from the hashtag “#OscarsSoWhite” these conversations have now sparked a discussion around Latinos in the industry and the lack there of on screen and behind the camera.

ABC has confirmed it is starting a “put pilot” centered around the late Tejano music star Selena Quintallia. It will be written and co-executive produced by Miquel Nolla, who has also worked on “Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and Private Practice.” Other producers include Selena's family members (Abraham Quantilla Jr, Suzette Quantilla Arriaga) Scooter Braun, Sergio Aguero, Jaime Davila, Rico Martinez.

The new show "Vida" focuses on two Mexican-American sisters who return to their hometown to find out the unexpected truth about their mother's identity. Showrunner Tanya Saracho depicts underrepresented social identities through the eyes of the Latinx family and community in the series.

Sundance Film Festival is hosting a Virtual reality, Augmented Reality, and Artificial Intelligence film lineup within their “New Frontier” program. Some of these films include “Dispatch”, “Eyes in the Red Sun”, and We Are Inclusion pick Angel Manuel Soto’s film “Dinner Party. ”

On MLK Day, let's be inspired to tell the whole American story, starting by having accurate representation on our screens. We stand in support of our African-American brothers and sisters as well as our Afro-Latinx community. When it comes to true representation, Hollywood needs to look further into the spectrum of these identities within the Latino experience.

Only one Latina (Patricia Riggen) has directed a top 1,100-grossing movie since 2007

CAA has signed Argentine writer-director Gabriela Tagliavini, whose sixth feature, Como Cortar a Tu Patan (How to Break Up With Your Douchebag), opened atop the Mexican box office in October. The AFI graduate and alumna of ABC’s directing fellowship is currently working on an untitled AMBI Group project starring Antonio Banderas and Mike Tyson and writing a script for Televisa, and she recently sold a pitch to Fox Studios. “I am very happy to have joined CAA,” Tagliavini said in a statement. “Their unparalleled influence, expertise in the industry and commitment to clients will enable my career to reach its full potential, and I am really excited for what this partnership will bring.”

The filmmaker’s other credits include Ladies’ Night, Border Run and Without Men. She continues to be managed by Ensemble Entertainment. Ream more on The Hollywood Reporter.

“Shape of Water” and “Coco” Win Big at the 2018 Golden Globes

This past Sunday on January 7th, Latino creators won at the Golden Globes. Guillermo Del Toro’s film “The Shape of Water” won two of the seven categories it was nominated for. This would include “Best Director of a Motion Picture” and ‘Best Original Score.” Also, Lee Unkrich’s and Adrian Molinas “Coco won “Best Animated Feature Film.”  You can see the full list of nominations for “Shape of Water” and “Coco” below.
