There’s a moment in Lucrecia Martel’s newest film, “Zama,” when her defeated protagonist, the eponymous Don Diego de Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) – a corregidor for the Spanish Empire, whose authority is continually undermined – is joined in frame by a llama, one that almost takes a position of prominence over the beleaguered colonial bureaucrat. It’s a slow developing moment that feels as absurd as it does unstaged, and it is pure Martel – a filmmaker who is continually able to mine the illusive line between the surreal and reality itself.

Saldana, then a 20-year-old ballerina from Queens, was visiting Los Angeles with a theater troupe of kids from all five boroughs who wrote and performed skits about guns and gangs. At 1 a.m., they slipped out of their hotel to see the stars.

Showrunner Tanya Saracho talks with THR about how her half-hour drama helps open the door for other series to explore identity.

In Starz's Vida, the characters often speak in Spanglish, peppering their majority-English sentences with Spanish words and phrases. It's an interesting move, especially because the show doesn't bother to subtitle these moments in order to accommodate non-Spanish speakers. But for some of the audience, it only adds to the authenticity.

Tanya Saracho walked into a meeting with an executive at the cable network Starz thinking she was being considered for a staff job in a writers’ room. Instead, the relatively fledgling TV writer walked out as the show-runner of Vida, a half-hour drama series premiering this Sunday about two ambitious, sexually adventurous sisters who return to their Latino neighborhood in Los Angeles after the death of their mother.

Now that he’s won the Academy Award for Best Director, Guillermo del Toro has considerably more leeway to see his passion projects through to completion. The first of those is “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” an adaptation of the bestselling book series by Alvin Schwartz that del Toro will co-write and produce. “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” helmer André Øvredal is directing the project, which CBS Films and Entertainment One just announced they’ll be co-financing.
