NALIP is excited to declare that NALIP member Jimmy Cohen’s documentary “Omar y Gloria” was declared best documentary at the Lisbon International Film Festival on July 2017. After receiving this award, “Omar y Gloria” was also screened at the Guanajuato International Film Festival and was recently invited to screen at the Monterrey International Film Festival.
“Omar y Gloria” synopsis:
“Omar and Gloria dance danzón. Gloria, at 80, is full of light, and for more than 15 years Omar has been her companion and dance partner. In addition, Omar and Gloria are mother and son. Through videotaping as part of their daily life, Omar and Gloria record every moment of their life as amateur filmmakers and function as spectators of themselves. Omar relates to life through Gloria. She relates to the world through her video camera. And together they give life to a unique story that is told through the music of the dance halls, their memories and the 11 steps that mark a good danzón.”
