Our America: Todos Unidos | Resources, organizations supporting Hispanic community in SoCal

This Hispanic Heritage Month, ABC7 celebrates Hispanic and Latino culture and tradition while examining social and cultural challenges unique to their community. "Our America: Todos Unidos" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 15, on ABC Owned Television Station streaming apps and on Hulu. 

ABC7 created a list of organizations that are working to support the Hispanic, Latino and Latinx communities in Southern California and throughout the nation. Catch NALIP as part of this list and read about other organizations that are dedicated to our beloved Latinx community here.


‘West Side Story’ Drops New Trailer — & Ariana DeBose is The One to Watch

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming 20th Century Studios remake West Side Story. Many viewers went to social media to comment praises about Ariana DeBose’s performance as Anita, a role originally played by Rita Moreno. West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort will premiere in theaters December 10.

Diverse TV Creators Talk Years of Self-Doubt: “We’ve Been Disappointed So Many Times”

The Toronto Film Festival hosted a panel where TV creators opened up about the self-doubt and rejection they faced when trying to bring their diverse projects to completion. The panel featured Mae Martin, co-creator of the Netflix and Channel 4 comedy Feel Good; Sierra Teller Ornelas, showrunner on the Peacock original comedy Rutherford Falls; and Bilal Baig, co-creator of CBC and HBO Max comedy Sort Of with Fab Filippo.

Apple TV+ Announces Bilingual Comedy Series Starring Eugenio Derbez

Acapulco is an upcoming bilingual comedy series starring Eugenio Derbez, from Coda, that will premiere on Apple TV+. The 10-episode series will feature Latine talent including Damián Alcázar, Camila Perez, Vanessa Bauche, Rafael Cebrián, and newcomer Fernando Carsa. Derbez will also serve as executive producer for this coming-of-age story.

The Mediapro Group Taps Hollywood Rep in Bid to Lure More Productions to Spain, Portugal (EXCLUSIVE)

L.A.-based Spanish publicist Alvar Carretero will represent the Barcelona-based multinational The Mediapro Group in Hollywood in an effort to bring more international productions to Spain and Portugal. Mediapro has been represented in the U.S. the last 25 years through its production centers in New York and Miami. The plan to launch a new Audiovisual Hub in March has led to a momentum in building Mediapro’s presence in Los Angeles.

Ana Bond: Sony Entertainment Is Embracing Internal and External Collaboration across Latin America

Sony’s Entertainment division has no plans to launch its own streamer, confirmed Sony Pictures VP and executive director for Latin America and Hispanic markets Ana Bond during the 5th Conecta Fiction. Sony Pictures will focus on partnerships, content, and creators to “create the best possible content.” According to Bond, SPT is working on 15 projects for SVOD platforms across Latin America and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Warner Bros’ ‘The Bodyguard’ Reboot Taps Scribe Matthew López To Pen

The remake of the 1992 Warner Bros’ film The Bodyguard, which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, announced that Tony-nominated playwright Tony Lopez, known for the play The Inheritance, will write the script inspired by the 1992 romantic drama. Since 2011, Dan Lin has been leading the project.

Study: Streaming Shows Employ More Women Than Broadcast Series Do

The latest annual study San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film finds that streaming services offer women more inclusion on and offscreen than broadcast networks. The study found that women accounted for 30 percent of creators, 31 percent of directors and 24 percent of editors in streaming compared to broadcast networks in which women accounted for 22 percent of creators, 19 percent of directors and 15 percent editors. However, broadcast networks fared better than streaming services when it came to women from underrepresented races with Black and Latina characters having more speaking roles than in streaming services.

Film Festival to Showcase Features, Documentaries, and Shorts from Our Communities

“Take Two” is a team-up done by The Panamanian International Film Festival in Los Angeles (PIFFLA) and the East Los Angeles Film Festival (ELAFF) to showcase Latine filmmakers from the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean through features, documentaries, and short films. The event will begin on OCtober 7th at Self Help Graphics in East Los Angeles and continue at Raleigh Studios Hollywood from October 8-10th. The lineup includes Mas de Mi (More of Me) a documentary of Latin Grammy winner Tony Succar, The Smile of Gerta a Panamanian short about Austrian Jewish woman Gerta Stern who fled from the Nazis to Panama, Ixch’umil a Guatemalan short about a 10-year-old girl whose indigenous grandmother helps her discover her cultural roots, and ¡Gaytino! Made in America a film version of the critically acclaimed play by Dan Guerrero.

Carmen Laforet’s Modern Classic ‘Nada’ To Be Adapted by Elvira Lindo for Mediacrest

Spanish novelist Elvira Lindo is set to write the adaptation of the post-Spanish Civil War novel “Nada.” The adaptation will be produced and distributed by Mediacrest, one of Spain’s fastest-rising independent TV production-distribution houses.  The novel won the biggest literary award Spain’s Nadal Prize in 1944. Daniel Domenjó, Mediacrest managing director, and Alberto Macías, the company’s head of fiction, alongside Lindo will discuss the challenges of adapting the novel at a panel during Conecta Fiction.

‘7 Prisoners’ Trailer: First Look At Netflix Thriller Produced By Oscar Nominees Ramin Bahrani & Fernando Meirelles

The trailer for the upcoming Brazilian thriller, 7 Prisoners, released on Wednesday. The film is produced by Oscar nominees Ramin Bahrani (The White Tiger, 99 Homes) and Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes, City of God) and will be released on select theaters and stream globally on Netflix in November. The film is a possible contender for Best International Feature Film during awards season.
