NALIP supports the 2017 International Conference on Hispanic/Latino Media and Marketing, as it is crucial for Latinos in media, especially scholars to have a platform and further develop their skills. The International Conference on Hispanic/Latino and Marketing originated in 2009 as the Assessing the State of Spanish-Language & Latino-Oriented Media International Conference.

Four was the lucky number for Latinos in media at the Golden Globes this year, or should we say unlucky?  Gina Rodriguez for her role in “Jane the Virgin,” Gael Garcia Bernal for his role in “Mozart in the Jungle,” Lin-Manuel Miranda for his original song in “Moana,” and Pablo Larraín’s film “Neruda”, were the highlighted Latinos of the night, but unfortunately none of them took the award. There was however a bigger representation when it came to the African-American community. It was great to see recognition of talent and as stated by the National Hispanic Media Coalition, great to see “broken barriers in an industry that has been slow to change“.  What does this mean for Latinos and inclusion in the industry; are we making progress, taking steps back or standing still?

As audiences continue to change, NALIP is excited to see studios committed to developing initiatives dedicated to diversity and inclusion. Recently, Universal Filmed Entertainment named Janine Jones-Clark SVP of Global Talent Development and Inclusion department. We believe this effort to embrace a more diverse culture will increase the quality of the studio’s work and allow it to continue expanding its audience. As viewers, we have the power to encourage change in Hollywood.

Deadline highlights Janine Jones-Clark new role:

 Netflix’s reboot of “One Day at a Time” does a refreshingly realistic take on a Cuban-American family. The show, which was released last weekend, consists of an all-Latino cast and has showrunners Gloria Calderón-Kellett and Mike Royce ensuring that the on-screen family stays true to its story. In an interview with E! News, Calderón-Kellett and actress Justina Machado (who plays Penelope) discuss why they are happy with the timing of the show’s release.
