NALIP's 2021 Academy Awards Recap"

Congratulations to all the nominees and well deserved winners of the night, we want to see more of our stories from BIPOC communities being told and celebrated, in order to do so we must continue to push for more inclusion across all media and remind readers why there’s still more work to do when it comes to including more diversity in Hollywood. While the 2021 Oscars showed more diversity in some areas and milestones for some creatives, a lack of representation for Latinx nominees was evident.

Afro-Latinx filmmaker Shaka King has made an incredible mark as director of Judas and the Black Messiah, creating a name for himself and sharing an important story of William O'Neal’s infiltration of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton. This year’s Academy Awards are taking a step in the right direction in terms of recognizing more diverse stories, talent, and creators. As an organization that advocates for inclusivity, we are proud and grateful to see this long anticipated change take place within the industry. However, we will continue to do our part so that more diverse representation can be seen on screen and off-screen.
