NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL LATINO FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES LINE-UP

The 8th Annual New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) announces its Premieres line-up of the latest and best in U.S. Hispanic and Latin American cinema. The festival runs from July 24 - 29, 2007, and opens with TRADE, a raw and powerful film on international human trafficking, and closes with EL CANTANTE, a salsa music epic starring Marc Anthony as the legendary Hector Lavoe, and Jennifer Lopez as his wife. Other premiere films feature some of the most impressive talent in the industry, such as Wilmer Valderrama, Kate del Castillo, Eduardo Verástegui, Manny Perez and Victor Rasuk. Tickets are available June 25 through Ticketmaster, the Florence Gould Hall box office (55 E. 59th Street), and the festival's web site: www.NYLatinoFilm.com.

More than just a film festival, NYILFF showcases more than 80 U.S. and international feature films, documentaries, and shorts. Industry panels and special events such as Dominican Night, Cinema Under the Stars, NYILFF New Music Showcase, NYILFF Vanguard and NYILFF Family Day demonstrate the festival’s dedication to providing a wide milieu of culturally relevant programming. The six-day schedule of events highlights the full range of Latino culture, targeting every segment of the community.

Opening this year’s festival is the Roadside Attractions release TRADE, directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner and starring Kate Del Castillo, Kevin Kline, Cathleen Gati, Alicja Bachleda, Cesar Ramos and Paulina Gaitan. Spotlighting the increasing traffic of people across international borders, Trade focuses on a 13 year-old girl from Mexico City, Adriana (Gaitan) who is kidnapped by sex traffickers, setting into motion her 17 year-old brother Jorge’s desperate mission to save her. Adriana's only friend and protector throughout her ordeal is Veronica (Bachleda), a young Polish woman tricked into the trade by the same criminal gang. As Jorge dodges immigration officers and other obstacles to track the girls' abductors, he meets Ray (Kline), a Texas cop whose own family tragedy leads him to become an ally in the boy's quest. Ray and Jorge give chase to Adriana’s captors through the barrios of Mexico City to a secret internet sex slave auction, culminating in a final confrontation at a stash house in suburban New Jersey – racing against the clock before Adriana is sold and disappears forever.

The Picturehouse Release EL CANTANTE, directed by Leon Ichaso, starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, wraps up the festival as its Closing Night presentation, sponsored by mun2, the bilingual network for young Latinos. The highly anticipated film is the dramatic biography of Puerto Rican salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe. The film follows Lavoe’s (Anthony) passionate relationship with Puchi (Lopez) and his quick ascent to international fame. Lavoe’s fast rise is matched by his tragic fall, fueled by the salsa star’s struggle with drugs and his own personal demons.

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premier venue for nonfiction film in the American West, is seeking submissions for its fifth annual event. From February 14-20, 2008 the festival will screen 100 films, including world and U.S. premieres, classics, rare and experimental works on Montana's largest screen at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula, Montana. In addition to 7-days of screenings, many public and VIP events including panel discussions, galas, receptions and networking round-tables.

The competitive event is open to non-fiction films and videos of all genres, subject matter, lengths and production dates. Awards and cash prizes will be given for Best Documentary Feature (over 50 minutes), Best Documentary Short (15-50 minutes), Best Mini-Doc (under 15 minutes) and best documentary about the American West (the "Big Sky Award").

VHS (NTSC/PAL), DVD (NTSC/PAL), DVCAM (NTSC/PAL) and miniDV (NTSC/PAL) accepted for preview.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: SHORTS & BEATS FESTIVAL

Art For Progress is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the 2007 Shorts & Beats Festival.

WHAT Shorts & Beats is an underground film festival that celebrates the short films of emerging auteurs: a fun environment where in selected short films are displayed while AFP's finest DJs provide the beats between showings. Cocktails and libations will be available while enjoying a growing community of artists and arts lovers.

WHEN Submissions must be postmarked no later than Saturday, June 30th. Any submissions received after this date will not be considered, nor will they be returned or application fees refunded. The call for submissions will culminate in a one night viewing event, featuring the works of those selected, set to take place on Friday, July 13th.

HOW Submissions will be accepted in the following formats: DVD (or playable disc formats, ie. CDs, etc), and via online links.

Short films should be no longer than 15 minutes.

All short films will be reviewed by a panel comprised of existing Art For Progress artist members.

There is a $10 application fee per film - used to cover administrative and processing expenses.

It’s the Festival of Nuestra Señora de Copacabana, and the Bolivian community in Argentina is mounting a procession to their patron saint that will last long into the night. Filmmaker Martín Rejtman is there as well, capturing the pageantry in elliptical moments of dance and music. MAYA ACQUIRES "AUGUST" AT LA FILM FEST

Chris Eska's first feature "August Evening" has been acquired by Moctesuma Esparza's upstart distribution company Maya Entertainment, in a deal signed after the film's competition debut this week at the Los Angeles Film Festival. The company will launch their distribution
division with the film.

 

 

U.S. HISPANIC SHOPS LEAVE CANNES WITH TWO AWARDS

Jun. 25, 2007 - CANNES (AdAge.com) - U.S. Hispanic agencies won awards only in the Film category with a Bronze each for Grupo Gallegos and LatinWorks at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival last week. The winner from Omnicom Group-backed LatinWorks, Austin, Texas, was for an Anheuser-Busch spot, "Classroom," that ran in the Super Bowl. I am looking for completed screenplays where the story takes place in a European holiday villa with rolling vineyards and a sleepy European town. To give you a better idea, I am about to shoot a movie in Greece, and we'll have access to such a location. If I can find a story I like that can be shot in a location like this or a farmhouse, I can shoot this movie at the same time we shoot our current movie. Two examples of stories along the lines of what we are looking for are: 'A Good Year' and 'A Walk in the Clouds.' However, the story must take place in present day and if there is another location besides the villa/farmhouse, it must be in the sleepy town - not at an airport or other country.

The script must be totally completed, polished and ready to shoot, as this is a small window to produce another movie while in the same location.

Some of the company's produced credits include: 'The Gigolos' (feature film nominated for international feature award at Los Angeles film festival, AFI), 'The Big Idea,' and 'The Never Generation' (TV Pilot).
