BURNS' "WAR" EXPANDS TO ADD HISPANICS

Jul. 12, 2007 - BEVERLY HILLS (AP) - Ken Burns, criticized for overlooking the role of Hispanic soldiers in his new World War II documentary, said nearly a half-hour of footage on Hispanic and American Indian veterans is being added to the film. Profiles of two Hispanics will conclude the first and sixth episodes of the roughly 15-hour, seven-part "The War," debuting Sept. 23 on PBS, Burns told a news conference. An Indian soldier's story will be at the end of episode five, he said. "There's been a hot political battle, and we tried to rise above and take the high road and respond as best we could," Burns said. FULL STORY HERE

PARAMOUNT DANCING TO "FOOTLOOSE"

Jul. 10, 2007 - (Variety) - Paramount is plotting a musical remake of the 1984 film "Footloose" and will develop it for "High School Musical" star Zac Efron and director Kenny Ortega. Dylan Sellers will produce. Ortega is in negotiations to helm and choreograph, and Efron is in talks to play Ren McCormack, the rebellious newcomer (originally played by Kevin Bacon) in a town where dancing has been banned. Original was directed by Herb Ross and scripted by Dean Pitchford. Plan is to turn the project into a full-blown musical. "Footloose" was already turned into a Broadway tuner. FULL STORY HERE

Summary of THE LOSING FIGHT

SHAWN, a black teenager, who's family is Muslim, has just received the unfortunate news that their oldest son, a US Muslim soldier in the Army was murdered and burned to death in Iraq by insurgents.

Angered by the act of atrocity, Shawn decides to avenge his brother’s death, by repeating the act on an innocent Kuwaiti, KHALID, a young man who runs a small chicken and biscuit stop with his father. Shawn informs his Puerto Rican friend RICKY, to go to the gas station to get some gas and meet him later on that night.

It’s closing time and Khalid’s dad gives his son the key to lock up and thanks him for putting a hold on his education, until the father can find good help. They embrace and Khalid sends his father home and stays behind to clean up. Later that night as Khalid is walking home, a car pulls up and Shawn jumps out of the car and hits Khalid with the butt of his GUN, tearing Khalid’s mouth to shreds. Khalid looks up and recognizes Shawn, as one of his daily customers; Shawn pulls the trigger and Khalid is shot at point blank, in the chest. Shawn grabs the gas container that Ricky filled up with gas and pours it on Khalid but Ricky intervenes and as they struggle, Ricky accidentally shoots Shawn in the stomach; in a moment of panic, Ricky gets in his car and drives away, leaving Khalid and Shawn, near to death.

Shawn looks over at Khalid who’s barely alive and asks him for forgiveness – as his life starts to slip away, Khalid calls 911, and tells the operator that his friend has been shot and is dying. Khalid accepts his forgiveness.

The next morning, Khalid’s dad is in front of his restaurant and waits for his son to arrive and open up their little establishment. He waits, looks at his watch, and knows that something has gone terribly wrong.
