Film Independent announced the winners of the Target Filmmaker Awards at the Los Angeles Film Festival’s Spirit of Independence event on Thursday, June 28. These awards included the Target Filmmaker Award for Best Narrative Feature which went to Chris Eska for AUGUST EVENING. The award carries with it an unrestricted cash prize of $50,000 funded by Target. Congratulations Chris!

In AUGUST EVENING, Jaime is an undocumented worker, putting in long days on a chicken farm and sharing cramped quarters with his family. When tragedy disrupts his life, he and his widowed daughter-in-law Lupe reluctantly travel across Texas to seek help from Jaime’s estranged children. But even as the pair struggles to stay together, they slowly come to realize the inevitability of growing apart.

The Transnational Communities Award is open to artistic, cultural and social projects that creatively use the technologic and conceptual tools available in the web, broadening the channels of communitarian communication and interaction and giving rise to spaces online where practices and stories are shared. The purpose of this award is to foster the access to cultural goods and to the technologies involved in its production and distribution, to promote the diversity of expressions and to recognize the citizen participation of the Transnational Communities that link Mexico and the United States in a daily and permanent way.

The call for submissions is open to individuals, groups, associations, organizations and institutions from Mexico and the United States that develop artistic, cultural and social projects for which the Internet is both a sufficient and necessary condition of viewing, expressing and participating.

Pipo Bonamino, long time NALIP member and LPA mentor, recently won a Gold Remi Award in the Music Video category at the

40th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.

His innovative editorial work was recognized for Jim Camacho’s “Houdini” music video at this prestigious film festival that receives international entries and selects the best work in the industry. In 2006, it has also screened at The Great Lakes Film Festival and was also awarded the Telly Award.

Houdini was directed by Emmy-nominee Steven Fischer and post produced at Right Cut Media Inc. based in Miami.

When an apartment building’s security doors malfunction, a group of disparate residents discover how oven-fresh cinnamon rolls can change destinies. The film stars Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson, David L. (Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley) Lander, and Maria Costa.

It screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner and will be screening at the Hollyshorts Film Festival Aug 10-12 at Cinespace and the Moondance Film Festival Sept. 7-9th at the Universal City Walk.

Jun. 29, 2007 - (Variety) - Media Rights Capital has set Cameron Diaz to star in "The Box," a horror film to be directed by "Donnie Darko" helmer Richard Kelly. Kelly wrote the script based on Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button." Production will begin in the fall on the pic, which will aim for a PG-13 rating. Diaz will play a young woman given a mysterious box by a stranger. She's told that certain things will happen depending on which buttons she presses. Media Rights Capital is committed to bankrolling the entire $30 million-plus budget, as it did with "Babel" and will with Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno." FULL STORY HERE
