2008 ALMA Awards Nominees Announced

This Monday on Wisteria Lane located on the Universal Studios back lot, NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía, Eva Longoria Parker (Desperate Housewives), and Cristián de la Fuente (USA Network’s In Plain Sight and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars) announced nominees, performers, and special honorees for the 2008 NCLR ALMA Awards.

The 2008 NCLR ALMA Awards will tape August 17 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The all-star event, which celebrates the outstanding artistic achievements of Latinos in motion pictures, television and music, will air Friday, September 12 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Television and film actress, Eva Longoria Parker, returns once again as executive producer and host of the telecast. To date, confirmed performers and presenters include Black Eyed Peas, America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, Jessica Alba, Adam Rodriguez, Enrique Murciano, Sofia Vergara, Cristián de la Fuente, Kate del Castillo, Pitbull, and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. Special honors will be presented to Linda Ronstadt, Shakira, and Narciso Rodriguez whose work has impacted the entertainment industry and influenced American culture.

The two-hour special is presented by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. The annual ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Awards recognizes and celebrates the outstanding artistic achievement of Latinos in film, television, and music. The ALMA Awards was created by NCLR in 1995 as part of its strategy to promote the diverse, accurate, and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the media and the enhancement of the Latino image in the entertainment industry. The show is an example of how inclusion strengthens the entertainment industry, just as diversity strengthens our country.

The show is presented with the support of sponsors and advertisers. Confirmed Presenting Sponsors for 2008 include Chevy and Target. Gold Sponsors are AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, Frito-Lay/PepsiCo, and Prudential. Silver Sponsors include American Airlines, Bank of America, Bud Light, ConAgra Foods, M&M's, McDonald's, State Farm Insurance Companies, Verizon, and Wachovia. Deadline Approaching: NBC's Comedy Short Cuts Festival

The submission deadline is approaching for NBC Universal's Third Annual Comedy Short Cuts Film Festival, a unique showcase of short, comedic films and videos produced with a culturally diverse production team, cast, or theme.

NBC Universal uses this festival as a pipeline for uncovering and developing diverse talent in front of and behind the camera. Semi-finalists' films will be screened before an industry audience in New York in September in conjunction with the New York Television Festival and finalists will be sent to Los Angeles for an exclusive industry screening in October on the Universal Studios lot.

The winning filmmaker will be given the chance to pitch to NBC comedy development and meet with NBC Universal's top network, studio, cable, and film executives. Additional prizes and opportunities are soon to be announced. Check the website for a complete list of partners and prizes from our 2007 festival.

NYILFF and NALIP's 2008 PITCHATHON (NYC)

This is the pitching event that could launch your career. The first half of the pitchathon panel will feature film executives, film directors and producers, who will share their invaluable insights and advice on how to successfully pitch your idea, film or completed script. The second half of the panel will give you an opportunity to pitch your project and get feedback and creative input from industry pros that are in the know.

2008 PITCHATHON, a forum for fine-tuning your creative pitches to industry executives. Composed of seasoned industry insiders from the directorial, production, development, casting and legal sectors, this panel will provide invaluable insights on how to successfully pitch your idea, film, or completed script's concept, as well as how to avoid common industry pitfalls. The panel will take place on Friday July 25, 2008 as part of the festival.

7-10 participants will be pre-screened and selected to pitch their project concepts and/or scripts ideas to a panel of buyers and development executives. Each participant will have 5-7 minutes to pitch his/her ideas. Two pitches will be selected to win, one by a panel of professionals, the second via a from the festival audience members in attendance. Whether you are selected to pitch or just stop by the panel to take in the wealth of information offered, you don't want to to miss this event.

Founding NALIP Board member receives Emmy Nomination!

Founding Board member of NALIP and LPA mentor Ray Telles received a nomination in the 29th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards in the "Outstanding Informational Programming - Long Form" category for Inside the Body Trade, which he produced and directed.

Inside the Body Trade is about the international trade in human organs involving buyers sellers, brokers and doctors. The film goes from the U.S. to China, Sweden, and India. It's a story about people desperately in need of organs and just how far they'll go to save their own lives.

The nominees were announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on Monday, Sept. 22.
