Comics Without Borders Airing Thursdays on Showtime

The television series Comics Without Borders is in its third week on Showtime, airing on Thursdays at 10:00pm. The showcase of multi-cultural stand-up comedians is hosted by Russell Peters, and features two comics in each half-hour episode.

The series was produced by Scott Montoya, Russell Peters, Clayton Peters and Neal Marshall. Scott Montoya also directed the series.

Many great comics are featured, so be sure to tune in to Showtime to check out the show. Tonight's episode has K-Von and Sebastian. It airs at 10:00pm, and then again at 10:30pm.

Call for Entries: Short Film Competition Against Domestic Violence

After an excellent response during its first edition in 2008, the call for entries for the second edition of Alza la voz contra la violencia doméstica (Raise the voice against domestic violence) has been launched!

We are looking for short films up to 15 minutes in length about this topic, with no restrictions regarding production date, format, or country of origin. (Films with dialogues in other languages must have either Spanish or English subtitles). Three awards of 50,000; 30,000 and 20,000 Mexican Pesos (aprox. 5, 3 and 2 thousand USDollars) respectively will be granted to the winning films The call for entries is available in Spanish here.

Please note that there is no online registration for this competition and it is therefore extremely important to send all requested information in a package with 3DVD copies of your film to the festival office:

Call for Applications: Distribution Grant for New York State Artists

free103point9 is pleased to announce the 2009 Distribution Grant for New York State Artists providing support for the distribution of new works in film, video, sound, new-media, and media-installation. This grant is for completed works only.

Funding is available from free103point9 through a regrant from New York State Council on the Arts' Electronic Media and Film Program. Grant awards will assist artists in making works available to public audiences and may include, but are not limited to: duplication of previews, screening, and exhibition copies of moving image and sound works; promotional materials including documentation and schematics of media-installation and new-media works. The rental or purchase of equipment for exhibition/distribution by individual artists is also eligible. Artists may request funding support up to a maximum amount of $10,000.

New to the Distribution Grant this year, successful applicants will also be awarded the additional opportunity to work with a project consultant. This mentor will have expertise in the grantees' specific genre of media art.

FilmL.A. Introduces Online Permit System

On September 29, FilmL.A. will introduce to our customers our new state-of-the-art Online Permit System (OPS), which will revolutionize how permits to film on-location are applied for, coordinated and delivered.

Permit seekers will be able to apply online and enjoy the many efficiencies OPS affords, as they:
- create and save templates for future applications;
- receive instant confirmation that permit applications were received;
- track permit progress and status of agency approvals in real-time; and,
- download paid-for and finalized permits at their convenience.

The customer-focused component of OPS was designed with input from prospective film industry end-users in an effort to help make their jobs easier. In addition to the option to use OPS, FilmL.A. customers can continue to submit applications in person, by email and by fax as before.

Trio Los Machos Opens Friday at CASA 0101

CASA 0101 presents a special presentation of a new play, Trio Los Machos, by Josefina Lopez. Trio Los Machos celebrates the lives of a male musical trio that gets fired after singing together for 50 years. Faced with uncertainty, they explore their past and their journey into music after escaping the Bracero program. With songs made famous by Trio Los Panchos, they survive the U.S. and inspire others to fall in love, all while keeping their own secrets from each other.

Latinologues Tu, Saturdays at The Hayworth Theatre

Cuban-American actress Odalys Garcia has joined the talented ensemble of actors in playwright Rick Najera's comedy, Latinologues Tu, now playing at The Hayworth Theatre. Latinologues Tu recently made its new home in Los Angeles at The Hayworth Theatre/ La Fonda on Wilshire Entertainment and Cultural Center for an indefinite run. Latinologues, written, created, directed and produced for stage by award-winning sketch comedy writer/actor Rick Najera, is a compilation of comedic and poignant monologues about Latino life in America.
