Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza, Dec. 12-14

The Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza (BHLIFE)—the first festival with an all Latina filmmaker line up—is back for its fourth consecutive year. Scheduled to run December 12th, 13th and 14th, the festival was founded by one of the most successful Latina writers of our generation, playwright/screenwriter/novelist Josefina López (Real Women Have Curves), who seeks to build a network of Latina filmmakers that draws attention to the growing number of Latinas working behind the camera. “The films of these Latina women constitute a body of work that acts as a powerful statement against the stereotypical portrayals of Latinas on screen,” says López. The festival will take place at Theatre CASA 0101, 2009 East 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90033 in the heart of the emerging Boyle Heights East 1st Arts Corridor.

“BHLIFE is a celebration of Latinas, their voices and their visions. BHLIFE is a festival that features the creative work of Latina film directors from all across the country. It is primarily an event dedicated to the ongoing effort to represent the complexities of our community and the women within it,” adds Director Fanny Veliz.

The festival will open with the film Alondra Smiles, an independent film co-written by Conchita Villa and her brother Francisco Villa. Marking a feature-length directing debut for Conchita, the award-winning film offers the touching story of a teenage girl who overcomes difficulty with grace and intelligence, and while in the process of planning her own “quinceañera” (Sweet Fifteen), she discovers herself. Opening night will also be highlighted by the presentation of the Excellence in Directing Award to filmmaker Betty Kaplan, whose credits include Doña Barbara, Almost a Woman and Of Love and Shadows. Adapted from the novel by Isabel Allende, the latter film gave actor Antonio Banderas his first major English-language credit. Based in Los Angeles, Kaplan was born in New York City and raised in Venezuela. The award is sponsored by Venezolanos in Hollywood. The award presentation takes place at 7:30 p.m. followed by the opening night film screening. A gala reception which will be held at the new home of the LA’s newest community arts monthly, Brooklyn & Boyle: Art & Life in Boyle Heights and Beyond, three doors west of Casa at 2003 East 1th St., will feature a performance by Strangely Attractive, a Latino rock band which has earned an immense following since it was formed just over a year ago.

The 2008 festival will include Features, Shorts, Youth Media, Documentaries, Experimental/New Frontier, a Filmmaker Luncheon and Panel Discussions. It spotlights films from across the country with Latina filmmakers from New York, Texas, throughout California and, of course, Boyle Heights in attendance. Prizes are awarded at the film festival but the ultimate goal is the unification of Latina filmmakers in transforming their image to one that empowers and inspires. This year, the festival includes a youth program curated by Erika Olmos and concludes with an awards ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 14th at 8 p.m.

BHLIFE is a production of CASA 0101, a non-profit community based performing arts organization dedicated to providing vital artistic, cultural, and educational programs in theater, digital filmmaking, art and dance. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law for 501 (c) (3)3 organizations.

"The Homies Hip Hop Show" on DVD Dec. 9

Season 1 of LATV's "The Homies Hip Hop Show" is being released on DVD December 9, 2008 by Polychrome Pictures. The show was created by NALIP member Rick Najera, produced by NALIPster Oskar Toruno and writers include Jason Nieves, Elizabeth Otero and Yvonne De La Rosa. “It was a show created by Latinos and written, produced and voiced by Latinos. Which makes it a very special project that I was proud to be part of” said Oskar.

When Rick Najera was VP of Programming at LATV one of the huge successes was the “Homies Hip Hop Show”, which spoofed Latino culture through the popular two inch figurines made popular by vending machines across the nation. Now the nationally syndicated show is being released by Polychrome Pictures and Universal Vivendi on a new DVD entitled: “The Homies Hip Hop Show, The Best of Season 1”.

“The Homies Hip Hop Show DVD” includes never before aired footage as well as footage from Season Two with advances to the animation. In fact, The Homies Hip Hop Show was the first nationally syndicated stop motion Latino animated series in America. The success of the Homies tripled the ratings during its run on LATV.

“This is a fun DVD that will ultimately meet its goal in making everyone laugh at Latino pop culture and bad Latino gang movies”, Rick Najera. For more information on The Homies Hip Hop Show DVD, log onto
