Call for Entries: 24th Annual Imagen Awards

The Imagen Foundation seeks to recognize and reward positive portrayals of Latinos in all forms of media, as well as to encourage and recognize the achievements of Latinos in the entertainment and communications industries. In keeping with its mission, The Imagen Foundation cordially invites all members of the entertainment and communications industries to participate in the 24th Annual Imagen Awards Competition.

Deadline for submissions: June 1, 2009

Winners will be announced at the 24th Annual Imagen Awards Gala on Sunday, August 23, 2009, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The Imagen Foundation works to create, promote, and enhance opportunities for all Latinos in front of and behind the camera and throughout the entertainment industry, and serves as a liaison between the industry and the Latino community by providing access, education and resources.


Latin Alternative Music Conference Announces Panel Topics

With a warm welcome from the Big Apple, the biggest event in the world for cutting-edge Latin music will return to the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City from July 7th - 11th. Featuring leading artists as well as many of the music industry's most prominent decision-makers, the highly-anticipated 10th-Annual LAMC is a "must play" event for developing and established acts alike.

Critico Premiering at Newport Beach Film Festival

The documentary Critico will have its U.S. Premiere at the 2009 Newport Beach Film Festival.

In this film by Kleber Mendoca Filho, over 70 critics and filmmakers discuss the age-old conflict between the artist and observer, between the creator and critic. A window is opened to an art which is more and more judged by an industry struggling to remain human.

LPA Mentor recognized at NAMIC Vision Awards

The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) today announced the winners of the 2009 NAMIC Vision Awards. Now in its fifteenth year, the NAMIC Vision Awards honor creators, networks and industry leaders for their commitment to producing multi-ethnic and culturally-relevant original television programming that reflects the rich diversity of our world's populace.

Winners in the performance categories included NALIP LPA Mentor Benito Martinez for "The Shield" (Best Performance - Drama).

Entries were judged by a distinguished panel of entertainment industry professionals. Judging focused on overall imagery (creative merit, originality, and presentation quality), sensitivity (the consideration given to cultural nuances), writing (the depiction of issues relevant to people of color) and the quality of acting in the performance categories.

Gabriela Yepes
NALIPster's short in Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at Cannes
Danzak, a short film directed and produced by NALIP member Gabriela Yepes, will be playing at the American Pavilion 2009 Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival. This event supports upcoming filmmakers by screening their films during the Festival while providing an opportunity for to connect with the global audience at Cannes. Danzak is one of the top ten films selected - out of 400 submissions.

Danzak will play on Saturday, May 16th, 2009, at the American Pavilion.

Danzak tells the story of Nina, a 10-year old girl living in the slums of Lima, capital city of Peru, whose life changes dramatically when her father and Master Dancer asks her to fulfill his last wish. It is inspired on an Andean myth.
