Maritza Guimet
NALIPster featured in Chivas Regal 18 "Spirit of Success" ad campaign

NALIP member Maritza Guimet is currently featured as a success story in the Chivas Regal 18 "Spirit of Success" advertising campaign. Chivas 18 is proud to provide vital community support through “Espíritu De Progreso Latino,” a national movement highlighting the strong Latino values and work ethic, and their pursuit of progress.

Click here to read the Full Story, including Maritza's three keys to success.

The Spirit of Success: Maritza Guimet

As a young girl, Maritza Guimet begged to go on-location with her father, who frequently worked on movie sets. She even had a natural and strong creative sense about working in media industry, but it wasn't until completing her training programs with NALIP that she truly was able to realize success as a filmmaker.

"Many creative people in the media industry are great at coming up with ideas, but lack the professional skills and business knowledge to turn a creative idea into a profitable venture. That is where NALIP's training was invaluable and turned my film career around to a profit-making business." In 2008, Guimet completed two feature-length films, currently in negotiations for distribution in Latin America.

While she admits to already being a fan of Chivas Scotch, Maritza expresses a particular loyalty to Chivas 18 because of the sponsorship they provide to non-profit organizations. "Their sponsorship allows organizations like NALIP to provide free training to many individuals; high quality training that makes a difference between succeeding or failing in this industry. That is invaluable to many lives, many futures."

Maritza’s 3 Keys to Success
1. Whatever you do, do it from your heart, make it your passion and be sure it’s something you love to do. That’s something money can’t buy.

2. Before you start creating something in the media field, know who your target audience is, understand them, and then have an actual business plan to reach your target. This will help provide a good ROI on your projects.

3. Make God, the Universe, or whatever spiritual power you have, a core part of your life and that faith will see you through the challenging times until your dreams come true.

Chivas Regal®18 is proud to provide vital community support through “Espíritu De Progreso Latino,” a national movement highlighting the strong Latino values and work ethic, and their pursuit of progress.

Since 2007, Chivas Regal 18 has partnered with non-profit organizations which help train Hispanic entrepreneurs and advance Hispanic business. From IT and financial management to planning and networking, these training and education programs have helped owners take their businesses to the next professional level. The National Association of Latino Producers (NALIP), for example, has dedicated their grants to presenting the Latino Producers Academy, an intensive training for film and media entrepreneurs. The program has resulted in the advancement of several award-winning Hispanic films currently in development and distribution.

Chivas Regal 18 will feature more stories of success in Hispanic Magazine and Univision’s “La Silla Del Poder” highlighting the true “Latino Spirit of Advancement” and culminating in “Chivas Regal 18: 18 Golden Keys to Success.”

Lourdes Portillo
NALIP Lifetime Achievement Honoree to be feted at Film Society Awards

Three major award recipients - Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Redford and James Toback - will be feted at the annual Film Society Awards Night on Thursday, April 30 in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin St. Francis Hotel. This year’s “Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award,” which honors a filmmaker working in forms other than narrative feature, will be presented to NALIP Lifetime Achievement Honoree and documentarian Lourdes Portillo. She will discuss her work in an onstage interview with film critic John Anderson, followed by a screening of her latest film, the teasing, prodding "anti-documentary," Al Más Allá.

Roberto Gudiño
NALIPster's doc accepted into Chicago Latino Film Fest

NALIP member Roberto Gudiño's (LPA 2008) documentary film Below the Fold: The Pulitzer that Defined Latino Journalism has just been accepted into the 2009 Chicago Latino Film Festival.

Roberto produced, directed and shot the 20 minute documentary. This documentary reveals how in 1984, a group of young Los Angeles Times reporters battled institutional prejudice and changed the newspaper industry when they became the first Latinos to win journalism's highest prize.

The film will be screening at Facets Multimedia Cinematheque (1517 W. Fullerton Ave., Chicago, IL 60614) on April 17, 2009 at 9PM in Chicago, Illinois.

Interviews with the writers and examples of the Times' former depictions of the Latino community establish the background for Latin American journalism's first Pulitzer. Current Latino journalists ask questions about whether, even after that groundbreaking event, the place of Latin American voices in the media has really changed.

Shipherd Reed from The Arizona Daily Star called it "A Strong Film."
