NALIP 10 Article in IDA Newsletter

NALIP member Chelo Alvarez-Stehle (LPA 2008) wrote an article about the NALIP 10 conference for the International Documentary Association's e-newsletter, which can be read below.

Article by Chelo Alvarez-Stehle

"If you are Latino you are American. You are 10-15,000 years of America!" said legendary playwright and filmmaker Luis Valdez in his opening keynote address at "NALIP 10: A Decade of Influence," the National Association of Latino Independent Producers 10th annual conference. Just as Newport Beach draped its manicured downtown with banners for the Newport Beach Film Festival, over 600 Latino filmmakers, writers, actors and industry executives gathered from April 16 to 19 in the heart of Fashion Island to celebrate a conclave of Hispanic film wizards. Attendance ranged from acclaimed Hollywood figures such as writer Peter Murrieta (The Wizards of Waverly Place) and director/choreographer Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), to less known independent filmmakers, some of whom are starting to make headlines, such as documentary filmmaker Hugo Perez (Summer Sun Winter Moon) and the new promise in Latino sci-fi, Alex Rivera (Sleep Dealer).

Bernardo Ruiz
NALIP Board Member represents WGAE to lobby Congress for increased PBS and CPB funding

The Writers Guild of America, East is urging the Obama Administration and Congress to increase appropriations for public broadcasting. NALIP Board Member (and Writer's Guild of America, East member) Bernardo Ruiz joined WGAE Executive Director, Lowell Peterson and a small delegation of writers (from the Daily Show with John Stewart, American Experience, Bill Moyers and The West Wing) to lobby Congress and the U.S. House of Representatives to increase appropriations for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Ruiz and other writers met with Senate majority leader Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi's office and Congressman David Obey, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. As an ultimate goal, the guild is urging our new administration to secure long-term funding and save public broadcasting from political and commercial crosscurrents.

To cap off the day of meetings, Writers Guild members presented stand-up comedy routines and participated in a panel discussion about the growing phenomenon of audiences turning to comedy/variety programs for news and the increasing synergy among Washington, Wall Street, journalism and late night comedy/variety programs. The panel discussion was moderated by WGAE President Michael Winship.

Tres Generaciones Seeks NALIP 10 Feedback

Tres Generaciones promotes the next generation of filmmakers who inspire audiences at major film festivals, by sponsoring behind-the-scene leaders like NALIP, who recognized three luminaries at their 10th anniversary conference and awards evening.

Tres Generaciones would like to congratulate NALIP for organizing such a wonderful ten year anniversary celebration, as well as applaud the honorees for their accomplishments. It was a pleasure to support NALIP's efforts, laugh along with the master of ceremonies, enjoy Kenny Ortega's dance moves on stage, and toast the night away!

Tres Generaciones was honored to be a part of this unforgettable night! We would like to hear from you - the NALIP members and artists.

Your feedback is essential to our efforts. Please take a few minutes to share your opinion in this Online Survey.
