HBO Offers First $10,000 Cash Award to Talented Latino Documentary Filmmaker

HBO has teamed with NALIP to find the next great Latino Documentary Film!

Social change has been the consistent undercurrent for HBO's critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary programs, with a myriad of issues presented in uncompromising quality and honesty. Through the HBO / NALIP Documentary Filmmaker Cash Award, HBO wants to focus its lens on the Latino experience and support the growth of social commentary by Latino documentarians.

One Latino Filmmaker will win $10,000

Entry deadline: June 26th, 2009

* Submissions must be from a film already in progress or finished - footage and proposal to be screened by judges.

* Filmmakers may be U.S. or international, but film must be in English or with English subtitles

* The winner must be 18 years or older, and of Latino descent.

* There is no limit to the number of entries: each entry must comply with the requirements listed in the submission form, and must submit a separate submission form for each.

* A panel of industry professionals will judge the films based on the following criteria: uniqueness of topic/subject matter, professional quality of the film, and the structure, tone and style planned for presenting the topic to audience. The Judges will select one film as the winner of the competition. Winner to be Notified by August 18, 2009!

Ambulante Gira de Documentales is sponsoring a panel discussion at the Los Angeles Film Festival: "Spotlight on Ambulante Festival: Filmmaking without Borders" with Diego Luna (Ambulante), Pablo Cruz (Ambulante), NALIP member Natalie Almada (El General), Gaul Cuesta and Anais Huerta (Rehje), Nailea Norvind (Born Without), Rebecca Cammisa (Which Way Home) Cherien Dabis (Amreeka). Moderator is Reed Johnson (Los Angeles Times).

NALIPster's monologues and vignettes featured in new stage piece

CASA 0101 is proud to present Ride to the Eastside - a new stage piece featuring monologues and vignettes by NALIP member and mentor Josefina Lopez, as well as up-and-coming writers and bus riders - play will run June 19-21, 26-28 and July 10-12.

Ride to the Eastside will be directed by Hector Rodriguez and is written by Josefina Lopez, Lorena Alvarado, Aniceris Cancel, Elizabeth Castillo, Serena Maria Daniels, Claudia Duran, Joanna Diaz, Jose L. Gutierrez, Victoria Kraus, Carmelita Maldonado, Adrianna Manjarrez, Karla Menjivar, Michael Spillers and Michael Villalobos. They are local writers and students in CASA's writing classes, who tell their bus and/or metro experiences. A call for artist/writers was made and with a city full of stories, Ride to the East Side has collected a handful of multifaceted stories with most based on true events. Josefina Lopez and Lorena Alvarado are producing.

Performances: Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 5 PM. Tickets: $15 - General, $12 - Students & $10 - Seniors & Boyle Heights residents.
