HBO has teamed with NALIP for a second year to find the next great Latino Documentary Film!

Social change has been the consistent undercurrent for HBO's critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary programs, with a myriad of issues presented in uncompromising quality and honesty. Through this cash award, HBO wants to focus its lens on the Latino experience, and support the growth of social commentary by Latino documentarians.

Applications are now available to submit your work-in-progress or completed documentary. One Latino Filmmaker will win $10,000.

Call for Submissions: ABC Los Angeles Talent Showcase

The Disney|ABC Television Group's Casting Project is accepting submissions for consideration for the ABC Los Angeles Talent Showcase as part of its ongoing effort to discover and develop culturally and ethnically diverse talent and actors with disabilities.

ABC's Talent Showcase has established an industry standard in creating opportunities for talent, with the majority of participants being given the chance to audition for a variety of ABC and competitive network pilots and ongoing programming. Past participants include Jorge Garcia of "Lost," Carrie Ann Inaba of "Dancing with the Stars," and most recently Arjun Gupta who has a role on "Nurse Jackie."

Submission Deadline is May 14, 2010

Participants for the talent showcase must be at least 18 years old. Previous acting experience/training is required of all, but professional representation is not necessary.

Joseph Tovares
CPB names NALIP mentor SVP for Diversity and Innovation

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has named NALIP mentor and NALIP 2010 speaker Joseph Tovares, senior vice president for Diversity and Innovation.

"In his new capacity, Joseph will work to extend public media's reach and service through innovation," said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. "Joseph is a proven leader who has the vision to advance CPB's commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in public media."

Tovares has been acting vice president for Diversity and Innovation since December and was responsible for overseeing the implementation of the NPS/Diversity and Innovation fund agreement for CPB. Prior to that, he served as the senior director of operations for Television Programming, where he managed the administration of programming grants to stations and independent producers.

"Public media is at the center of unprecedented technological, financial and demographic change," said Joseph Tovares. "While there are certainly challenges ahead for us, there is also opportunity within our reach if we as a system can move to leverage the power of America's great diversity while continuing to build on our long tradition of innovation."

Tovares is an award-winning producer and executive producer with a long history of commitment to public media. Prior to his work at CPB, Tovares was the executive producer for La Plaza, the Latino production unit at WGBH and was the series editor and director of New Media at American Experience. He also produced a film for Blackside, Inc. and has worked for KLRN in San Antonio, KLRU in Austin, and KET in Lexington.

His multi-platform projects include Zoot Suits Riots and Remember the Alamo, both for American Experience. He was the executive producer of Maria Hinojosa: One-On-One and its Spanish language companion series, Conversaciones con Maria Hinojosa, as well as the Emmy award-winning Luis Tiant, A Baseball Story.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Tovares holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcasting and Film from Boston University and a master's in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jesus Trevino
NALIPster's doc broadcasting on KCET

NALIP mentor and NALIP 2010 closing plenary speaker Jesus Trevino's documentary Visions of Aztlan will be broadcast on KCET on Thursday, May 6 at 9:00pm.

This labor of love documentary about the first generation Chicano and Chicana artists of the '60s and early '70s includes interviews with 24 artist and showcases spectacular art.

Director and editor of the film was Jesus Trevino, producer and director of photography was Armando Acevedo, and the original music score was composed by Germaine Franco.

Emilio Kauderer
NALIP mentor composes score for Oscar winner

NALIP mentor Emilio Kauderer was the composer for the Oscar winning film The Secret in Their Eyes, just being released by Sony Pictures Classics. With the score that he composed for the movie in collaboration with Federico Jusid, they have also won:
- Premio Clarin in Argentina for Best soundtrack. (From the Critics).
- Premio Sur for Best soundtrack. (from the Academy of MP) (Argentina)
- The Havanna Film Festival for Best soundtrack. (Cuba)
- Nominated for the Goya Awards for Best soundtrack. (Spain)
- Nominated for the Condor de Plata Awards. (Argentina)
