Longoria, Slater set for Latino Comedy
Tagliavini helming magic-realist indie film

By Anna Marie De La Fuente, Variety

Eva Longoria Parker and Christian Slater have boarded the magic realist Latino comedy "Without Men," helmed by L.A.-based Argentine helmer-scribe Gabriela Tagliavini.

Comedians Paul Rodriguez, Oscar Nunez and Judy Reyes ("Scrubs") join Monica Huarte, Maria Conchita Alonso and Kate del Castillo ("Under the Same Moon") to complete the cast.

Principal photography kicked off this week near Santa Barbara. Anthony Moody, Lucas Jarach and Jason Price are producing the private equity-backed indie pic.

"Without Men" is based on international bestseller "Tales From the Town of Widows" by James Canon.

Longoria's character leads a group of women in a remote Latin American village forced to fend for themselves after their men leave to fight in a civil war. A battle of the sexes ensues when the men return to reclaim their power.

"Through humor and fantasy, the story not only immerses us in a world of magic realism but also deals with important issues of identity and the role of women in society in a very comedic way," Longoria said.

Tagliavini's "Ladies' Night" performed well at the Mexican box office. She also helmed "30 Days Until I'm Famous" for VH1 and Maverick; Madonna exec produced.

She is writing the screenplay for "Cantinflas," a biopic about the Mexican comedian-thesp, co-produced by former NBC Entertainment topper Ben Silverman.
