PitchFest: Have you submitted your PitchFest project yet? The submission deadline has been extended to August 15th! Get that sizzle reel together and polish your pitch. Categories are Documentary and Reality, one-offs and series. Your pitch should include a video of at least three minutes and a verbal pitch at least three minutes. Any combination not to exceed eight total minutes. These should be new works in progress available for acquisition, licensing or funding. And, this year there is a cash prize!

Keynote Conversation: We are pleased to announce that acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger will be featured as the Non-Fiction, Keynote Conversation. The award-winning filmmaker's most recent documentary Crude is now the focus of an important First Amendment rights case and appeal.

New Master Classes:

Peter Hamilton - Creator and Curator of the website DocumentaryTelevision.com will be making his West Coast debut will be at WESTDOC 2010. If you receive Peter's weekly e-mails, you know that his research and insight into the non-fiction /reality genre is the best thing going.

Fernanda Rossi - The Documentary Doctor has prepared a special workshop for WESTDOC. Bring your trailer or written pitch and learn what works to make that presentation into a deal.

Acclaimed DP Philip Bloom will be coming in from London to teach a full two-day Master Class all about the sensational new HDSLR cameras. First day will outline hardware, software and tools to shoot with HDSLRs. Second day will include post production techniques and editing.

Jem Schofield - This two-day Small Production Master Class consists of six sessions and is designed for independent producers, filmmakers & editors interested in camera, lighting, audio, post & distribution using emerging technologies.

Call for Entries: CineFestival en San Antonio

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center presents the 33rd Annual CineFestival en San Antonio - the longest running Latino film festival in North America.

CineFestival en San Antonio is an important regional forum for screening film and video works that showcase the breadth and diversity of the Chicano/Latino experience.

Festival dates: February 3-6, 2011
Festival theme: Aztlan in Focus

ITVS International Call 2011

ITVS announces our new International Call deadline: December 10, 2010 for International Call 2011. This funding is for production and post-production funding only, for international producers and filmmakers making documentaries with international content. Even if you've previously applied for funding, you are welcome to apply again with the same project or an entirely new one.

Please read our submission guidelines that describes and explains what kinds of documentaries we are looking for and what working with us entails. Please note: we do not provide research and development funding in this Call.

ITVS International promotes the exchange of compelling documentary films between the United States and other nations, going beyond stereotypes and headline news to provide television audiences around the world with new insight into the cultures and people that comprise our global community.

ITVS International Call enables independent producers from outside the United States to create documentaries for U.S. television. Through the Call, storytellers from other countries introduce U.S. audiences to their global neighbors, opening a window into unfamiliar lives, experiences and perspectives from around the world.

Kevin Bender & Edward Hermoza Kramer
NALIPsters win a Pacific Southwest Emmy Award for their doc

NALIP members Kevin Bender and Edward Hermoza Kramer won the recent Pacific Southwest Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Documentary for their film Thinking Grande! Creating California's Mexican Wonderland.

The film tells the story of the Mexican immigrant who worked twenty years to achieve his vision of a 'Mexican Disneyland' in the heart of California, only to have the county shut it down.

It's an inspiring film about what happened when one Mexican dishwasher put his mind, heart, hands and soul to work fulfilling his American Dream.

The film can be viewed for free on-line or purchased on DVD at www.thinkinggrande.com


James Garcia Sotomayor
NALIPster's film nominated for Imagen Award and screening at NYILFF

NALIP member James Garcia Sotomayor's movie Taught to Hate, a short film inspired by real life hate crimes, has been nominated for the 25th Annual Imagen Awards. The Imagen awards will be presented on Sunday, August 15th, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.

Additionally, Taught To Hate will screen at the New York International Latino Film Festival on Thursday, July 29 at 2:30pm at SVA Theater Screen 1, and Sunday, August 1 at 2:00pm at SVA Theater Screen 2.

James Garcia Sotomayor directed and executive produced the film to explore the sociological basis of racial violence, and if this could spread. Garcia Sotomayor co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Caban, and the film has already won the Award of Excellence from The Indie Fest.

Brandon Hannan, who played Vito Spatafore Jr. in The Sopranos, starred in the movie next to Arturo Castro, Nick Raio, Helen Proimos and Lorraine Rodriguez.

The film is about Hispanic day workers who are harassed by teens who, filled with the hatred taught to them by their families, perceive the day workers to be a threat to their livelihood.
