AFI FEST 2010 starts next week! NALIP is proud to be hosting the FREE screening of Carancho at AFI FEST presented by AUDI, taking place November 4-11 at Grauman's Chinese Theater, neighboring Mann 6 Theaters, and the Egyptian Theatre. ALL REGULAR SCREENINGS ARE FREE!

Argentina | France | Chile | DIR Pablo Trapero
CAST: Ricardo Darin, Martina Gusman, Carlos Weber, Jose Luis Arias, Fabio Ronzano

In Argentina, more than eight thousand people die every year in road accidents. Each victim represents a potential insurance claim, especially for Sosa, a sleazy lawyer who stalks hospital waiting rooms and accident scenes in search of prospective customers. Sosa is caught in a moral dilemma when he meets Lujan, a pretty doctor and ambulance medic who helps him see the corrupt and inhumane roots of his work. Together Sosa and Lujan will try to escape the crooked industry, but Sosa's secret past become an insurmountable obstacle. Writer/director Pablo Tapero (LION'S DEN) returns to AFI with his latest noir thriller inspired by a national epidemic of poverty, corruption and ineffective laws. Argentina's most popular and respected actor Ricardo Darin (THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES) and captivating actress Martina Gusman fiercely rush us through intense trauma, blood and affection with this love story set in the dangerous streets and ERs of Buenos Aires.

Call for Applications: Global Film Initiative's Feature-film Production Grants

In its continuing effort to promote original filmmaking by individuals from around the world, the Global Film Initiative is pleased to announce a call for the Winter 2011 cycle of its feature film production grants program. Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2011, and decisions will be announced in March 2011.

Global Film Initiative production grants are awarded twice a year, in winter and summer, to filmmakers whose work exhibits artistic excellence, authentic self-representation and accomplished storytelling. The granting program furthers the Initiative's mission of contributing to the development of local film industries while offering audiences a variety of cultural perspectives on daily life around the world. Monies received through the Initiative's granting program are used to support completion of film production, and to subsidize post-production costs, such as laboratory and sound mixing fees and access to modern editing systems.

The Global Film Initiative accepts grant applications from countries in the following regions: Latin America, the Caribbean (excluding Cuba), Africa, the Middle East (excluding Iran), Asia (excluding Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan), and Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

This January, the Global Film Initiative will award production grants of up to $10,000 each to select applicants during its winter granting cycle. These funds are made available following the Initiative's evaluation of an applicant's completed screenplay and early film-footage, and may include a pre-sale option for exclusive U.S. distribution of an applicant's film by the Initiative. Individuals may submit more than one film for consideration per granting cycle but please note that only applications from qualifying countries or regions will be considered and that production grants are not available for documentary or short films.

The Global Film Initiative strongly believes in supporting narrative storytelling traditions from around the world and invites all qualified applicants to submit their work for granting consideration. For Applications & Guidelines, please visit:

Filmmaker, composer and violinist William D. Caballero (LPA 2008) - a NALIP member and winner of the 2009 HBO-NALIP Documentary Grant - and the William D. Purchase tickets online or at the Apollo Theater box office.

Speak! So The World Will Listen! Uganda, is an hour long multimedia experience that combines documentary-style visuals/testimony and live symphonic music. Drawing upon a wide library of personally recorded interviews and footage based on Caballero's multiple visits to Uganda, it's subjects include the rehabilitated children of a local orphanage, the survivors of the Ugandan Civil War, a Lesbian gay rights activist, and several others. These stories are combined with a classical score that blends Ugandan rhythms with western minimalism, and is performed by a 14 member string/woodwind ensemble.
