The Night Watchman (El Velador)
Mexico/USA | DIR Natalia Almada (LPA 2003, Estela winner)
Festival alum Natalia Almada follows Martin, the night watchman of one of the most ornate cemeteries in northern Mexico, where drug lords and corrupt cops are laid to rest. A documentary spawned from violence, The Night Watchman shows the end result of a chronic societal crisis. But Almada's approach is poetic, not sociological, filled with striking surreal images of elaborate mausoleums that disrupt the pastoral landscape. As the cemetery, filled with widows tending to their husband's shrines, constantly expands, the dreamlike quality of Almada's filmmaking creates a disembodied atmosphere where the poor and living labor day and night for the rich deceased.

Paraiso For Sale
USA/Panama | DIR Anayansi Prado (LPA 2003)
Bocas Del Toro, Panama has become a haven for ex-pat retirees. While their introduction to the local community hasn't come without its complications, a bigger threat are the voracious corporations eager to turn the province into the latest Caribbean hot spot.

This engaging and revealing documentary tells the personal stories of the people who call the exquisitely beautiful area home and would like to keep it that way. From an American couple who've invested not just in their home but in their Panamanian community to a local businessman turned political hopeful, the characters and stories Prado tracks speak to the larger global issue of communities, new and old, under siege from faceless corporations.
