NALIP 2012 Is Proud to Announce the 2012 ESTELA Award Winners!

Every year the NALIP ESTELA Award honors a talented Latino filmmaker who either through a stunning debut or a steady rise in a relatively short period of time has distinguished himself/herself through their work to date. This award is for a Latino filmmaker whose achievements reveal leadership, creativity, and tenacity, as well as vision and passion for his/her craft and has made at least one feature. This year NALIP is proud to announce Patricia Martinez De Velasco (Aqui Entre Nos) as the 2012 ESTELA Award narrative winner and Ari Palos and Eren McGinnis (Precious Knowledge) as the 2012 ESTELA Award documentary winners!

About the filmmakers:

Patricia Martínez de Velasco is an award winning director, born in Mexico City. Patricia's First Feature film, Aquí Entre Nos, has won the Best Actor Award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, Mexico; the Bronze Zénith Award for First Feature Film at  the World Film Festival in Montreal, Canada; the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the 37th Iberoamerican Film Festival in Huelva, Spain, the Award to the Best Screenplay given by the Press Association of Huelva and the Andalucía International University Award (UNIA) for the feature film that best addresses the social problematic in Latin-America. Aqui Entre Nos is going to be released in Mexico at the end of March. Patricia is the author of the book "Directoras De Cine: Proyección De Un Mundo Oscuro" ("Women Directors: Projection of a Dark World"), published by IMCINE and CONEICC. Patricia has directed short films and documentaries films including: Matilde Landeta and La Vaquita Marina (The Little Cow). Patricia’s commercial spot "Dad" took the Grand Prix at New York Festival. And her spot "Reality" (about anorexia) has won numerous awards including a Gold Prize from AdAge Magazine, a Gold Prize at the Addys, and it was included in the AICP Show. She graduated with honors from La Universidad Iberoamericana and el Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, where she studied film production.

Ari Luis Palos (Director, Precious Knowledge) has directed and shot a number of films including: The Beauty Salon, Mas Alla de la Frontera/Beyond the Border, Impresario, The Kentucky Theatre, El Rio de los Perros/The River of the Dogs, Al Garete/Adrift,Corazon del Plata/Heart of Silver, and The Spirituals. Ari enjoys participating in Tucson’s All Soul’s Procession; a performance art extravaganza where he transforms into a dead vaquero to mourn and celebrate loved ones who have passed. He once rode a Harley Davidson motorcycle from Oaxaca, México to a small factory in Nicaragua, just to smoke the world’s finest cigar.

Eren Isabel McGinnis (Producer, Precious Knowledge) has produced 19 movies including P.O.V.'s Tobacco Blues, The Girl Next Door (shortlisted for an Oscar!), Beyond the Border, The Spirituals, and Dos Vatos-México. She has a degree in Cultural Anthropology from San Diego State University, and a certificate in Film and Video Theory and Production from the University College Dublin, Ireland. Eren, a Fulbright scholar, spent a year of living, writing, and filmmaking in Juchitán, México. She is currently in training for the grueling El Tour de Tucson bike ride and enjoys hiking in the Sonoran desert or any place where there is a trail to the mountaintop.
