Project:Involve is Film Independent’s signature diversity program, dedicated to increasing diversity in the film industry by cultivating the careers of under-represented filmmakers. The program, which runs from October through June, selects filmmakers from diverse backgrounds and filmmaking tracks. During the nine-months, the Fellows are paired one-on-one with a mentor from the film industry, assigned to a team to make a short film incorporating a given theme, and attend monthly filmmaking workshops and other educational seminars.

Directors Lab

Description
Designed to help directors who are prepping their independent feature films, the Directors Lab is an intensive ten-week program running in Los Angeles in February and March. Under the guidance of the Lab Mentors, Directors Lab Fellows receive script feedback, discuss the vision for their films, and select short scenes from their scripts to workshop. Fellows cast actors and go through an in-class rehearsal of their scenes. Finally, each Directors Lab Fellow goes through a mini-production, learning how to break down a script into a shot list, collaborate with cinematographers, and construct a scene in the editing process. A maximum of eight projects are selected.

Support Provided
Film Independent provides the Lab Fellows with digital camera and sound packages, as well as a small stipend to shoot their scenes. All scenes are then critiqued by the Lab Mentors as well as the other Fellows. They also receive A one-year membership with Film Independent, a pass to the Directors Close-Up, which runs concurrently with the Lab, a pass to the Los Angeles Film Festival, Inclusion in the FIND Talent Guide, a year-round support from Film Independent.

Documentary Lab

Description
Designed to help filmmakers who are currently in post-production on their feature-length documentary films, the Documentary Lab is an intensive seven-week program running in Los Angeles in March and April. The Lab’s focus is twofold: (1) provide creative feedback and story notes to the selected filmmakers; and (2) help filmmakers strategize the completion, distribution, and marketing of their film.
Additionally the program serves to advance the careers of the Lab Fellows by introducing them to film professionals who can advise them on both the craft and business of documentary filmmaking. Lab Fellows have several guest-speaker sessions with established documentary filmmakers – directors, producers, and editors – and other industry professionals.

Screenwriters Lab

Description
Film Independent’s Screenwriters Lab is an intensive five-week program running two to three evenings a week in Los Angeles in August and September. The Lab is designed to help screenwriters improve their craft, develop their voices as writers, and take their current scripts to the next level. During the Lab, Fellows receive feedback on their scripts from the Lab Mentor, outside advisors, and the other writers in the program. A secondary goal of the program is to help advance the careers of the Lab Fellows by introducing them to film professionals who can advise them on both the craft and business of screenwriting. Lab Fellows have several guest-speaker sessions with established screenwriters to do case study of their films, hear about their career, and discuss the writing process. Additionally, Screenwriting Fellows have one-on-one meetings with established screenwriters, producers, and other industry professionals who act as advisors on the Fellows’ projects. A maximum of ten projects are selected for the Lab. Writing partners are welcome to apply as teams. All applicants to the Screenwriters Lab will receive written coverage on their submission regardless of acceptance.
