ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: CRUZ ANGELES participated as a directing-and-writing fellow at the 2005 Sundance Institute Filmmaker's Lab. He is an Annenberg Film Fellow and the 2006 NHK/Sundance International Filmmakers Award U.S winner with his feature length screenplay Don't Let Me Drown. As a graduate of the prestigious NYU film program, Cruz has garnered various awards for his student short films. In 2001, Cruz won a Director's Guild of America Award for Best Latino Student Filmmaker for his short film Abuela's Revolt. In 2003, his short film The Show won Best Student Short (2003 Woodstock Film Festival), Best Experimental Short (2003 Deep Ellum Film Festival), and Best Screenplay (Festival Du Cinema De Paris) and was screened on Showtime as part of the Showtime Latino Filmmaker's Showcase. His award-winning short films have screened at festivals worldwide and have also been broadcasted by PBS, Telemundo and Si TV. He recently completed post-production on his latest short film, The Negative, a psychological thriller shot at the US-Mexico border and based on the folklore that photographs steal your soul. Cruz is represented by Ben Smith and Renee Tab of ICM.

In May 2003, a refrigerated truck carrying more than 80 undocumented immigrants from the Mexican border drove into the heartland of Texas with horrifying results.

The True Story

Victoria Para Chino is a short narrative film based on the worst single case of illegal immigrant deaths in United States history. When the Highway Patrol discovered an abandoned trailer in Victoria, Texas, 17 were already dead, including a five year-old boy and his father. Two more later died in a hospital that evening. Immediately after the truck was discovered, law enforcement agents began tracking down those responsible.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: CARY FUKUNAGA graduated with a degree in history from the University of California Santa Cruz and L'Institut d'Ètudes Politiques (IEP) de Grenoble. He has traveled extensively through Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America, where he studied and photographed the aftermath of neo-colonialism. He began crewing on music videos and commercials in Los Angeles four years ago and is now completing an M.F.A. in Directing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He is the recent recipient of a Student Academy Award and a Princess Grace Award. Besides Victoria Para Chino, he directed the short, Kofi (2003), Winner Best Short, Bronx Independent Film Festival. "BETTY LA FLACA"

Skinny Betty might just as well not exist given the lack of attention she gets from men, including her boyfriend Carlos. Her co-worker, Reina, recommends she have some work done to enlarge and enhance the most important part of the body--her butt. When Betty arrives at the homegrown ‘clinica’ in Maria Dolores living room in the Bronx, she has no idea how much impact a little ‘work’ will have on her life.

 

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: HUGO PEREZ is a filmmaker and writer and winner of the 2006 HBO/NYILFF Short Film Award and will be broadcast on HBO during winter of 2006. Perez previous short film “Julieta y Ramon” was broadcast as part of the 2005 Showtime Latino Filmmaker’s Showcase which spotlights the work of emerging Latino directors. His writing has been featured in the New York Times Magazine and Salon, and his films have screened at venues such as MoMA and the Smithsonian. Currently, Perez is Producer and Director of “In the Footsteps of Orpheus” a feature documentary that explores the life, work, and legacy of the Hungarian poet Miklos Radnoti who died in 1944 during the Holocaust. Perez is the founder of M30A Films which has a number of narrative and documentary projects currently in production.
