NATIONAL CONFERENCE

NALIP held its Ninth National Conference in Dana Point, California March 6 – 9, 2008. After successful Conferences in Santa Barbara, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Long Beach, we remained on the West Coast within driving distance of Los Angeles in order to accommodate the funders, instructors and representatives who like easy access to this weekend with top, mid-level and emerging Latino filmmakers.  We had over 750 participants, hosted by Conference Co-Chairs Frida Torresblanco (PAN’s LABYRINTH) and playwright Elaine Romero (Secret Things). Sin Limites;  Trends in Pan-Latino Cinema was a weekend of plenaries, workshops, keynotes and talent showcases that honored LA MISMA LUNA writer/executive producer Ligiah Villalobos and journalist/advocate Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, PhD (“Defend the Honor” Campaign). We also awarded our third Estela Awards, endowed by the McDonald’s Corporation, that salute two rising stars on the Latino Media scene: feature director Patricia Riggen (LA MISMA LUNA) and documentary maker Almudena Carracedo (MADE IN L.A.).

The 2009 Conference will be NALIP’s tenth! Co-chaired by NALIP Founding Board Members David Ortiz (Universal) and Frances Negron-Muntaner (professor, UCLA/Columbia University), the Conference will embrace the storytelling energy that all Latinos bring to our passion for film and television. We plan to welcome back the special Latino edition of Back Stage’s Actorfest that premiered at Conference 9, along with the music, comedy and performer showcases, special screenings and other favorite elements of this inspiring and lively weekend.     The Conference 10 website, with full program and registration information will be available online starting December 2008.
