"The Basics of Writing a TV Spec"

Time: 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Location: NBCUniversal

Complimentary for NALIP Members

This interactive workshop is designed to guide lead aspiring writers through some of the techniques that will be helpful in getting their first (or next) spec script started, be it a one-hour drama, or a half hour comedy.

Writing a great spec script that will get you noticed starts before any script writing is done. It begins by acquiring a knowledge of the show you are writing for, being able to copy the existing characters' voices of that show, coming up with an episode idea/story that is not only original and highlights your unique voice, but also stays true to the story structure already established, and choosing the right spec script to write. This 2 1/2 hour workshop will lead aspiring writers through some of the techniques that will be helpful in getting their first (or next) spec script started, be it a one-hour drama, or a half hour comedy. The workshop will also include the basic structure of a beat sheet and how to break the A, B, and C storylines for their one hour, or half hour spec.

Ligiah Villalobos, who we was previously featured in our #WeAreInclusion Campaign, a writer, producer and director, who has worked both in feature films and television. Before these roles, she was a studio executive, working at the Walt Disney Company. She has overseen the ABC Diverse Program and worked at the CW, overseeing six shows, such as Steve Harvey and The Jamie Foxx Show. Today, Villalobos teaches at Cal State University, Los Angeles, and is also currently developing two TV series ideas.
