[00:05] NALIP, World Channel, and CBP are teaming up to bring this year’s Latino Lens Incubator: Beyond Graduation

[00:23] This year’s CPB Incubator topic focuses on what happens after students graduate from high school.

[00:30] This webinar will cover the following topics: Why we created this incubator? What does the incubator consist of? Who can apply? What are the requirements? Q&A

[00:52] The incubator program, “Beyond Graduation” was created in support of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative made possible by CPB to help communities address the high school dropout crisis and keep more students on the path to success in college and careers.

[01:08] We also aim to help diverse content creators advance their careers in media.

[01:13] We will be selecting five (5) finalists to receive twenty-thousand dollar ($20,000) individual grants.

[01:20] We will be selecting three (3) documentary shorts and two (2) scripted shorts that discuss students’ lives after graduating highs school.

[01:36] Incubator process: Finalists will be selected in February. After being selected, you will receive your grant. Selected finalists will be receiving mentorship and assistance from NALIP and World Channel throughout every step of production. Final cut will be due in July

[02:20] Your piece will be distributed via World Channel in August and screened at NALIP’s Latino Media Fest in September.

[02:30] You don’t have to be an established filmmaker to apply. ANYONE can apply

[02:39] Requirements include, a submission form and work sample, a concept proposal (including how concept is appropriate for public media), a budget outline, and a production timeline

[05:14] Question from Christian Hernandez : You mentioned delivery deadline is July? What date exactly? I missed the first two minutes.

[05:20] We are expecting to receive the completed product by mid-July 2018. Because this is an incubator, the hard deadlines that need to be met will vary from project to project.

[06:58] Question from Marcos to All Panelists : Do you prefer if projects are centered around a community organization, school organization, or an individual

[07:11] There is no specific narrative we are looking for. The only thing we ask is, make it a good pitch.

[07:41] Question from Christian Hernandez : I’m interested in looking for sponsors and partnerships. For funds, equipment and post-production. What can I “offer” to them… like a producer credit or co-producers? Is World Channel / NALIP open to something like this?

[07:51] Although we are open to other funding coming on board, World Channel is still public media. There are specific editorial/journalistic lines that we must be aware of. Funders [cannot have editorial credit. Make sure to submit your incoming funding within your required budget outline.

[09:28] Question from Larianny Perez : In the application you mentioned writing down possible partnerships. Do you mind explaining that a bit more - because it seems like we have production and distribution partners.

[09:37] Aside from established partners like American Graduate, we want to know of any additional partners and funding. Again, extra partners and funding will not disqualify you. We just want to make sure that distribution will not be limited because of these partnerships.

[12:26] Question from Christian Hernandez : I’m working with two college-access non-profits that are interested in participating in the documentary (as interviewees). They want to use the documentary in their social media channels to help them expose their work and fundraise. Is this something they can use as a tool?

[12:46] Once these films are published, they will be considered public media. That means that they will have access to view and share the video. They can share the content if that helps as promotion but we can’t go into this project with idea that this is solely promotional material for them.

[14:02] Question from Larianny Perez : Follow-up on Partnerships: I was thinking about partnering with Boys and Girls Club to possibly have their members be in the film or maybe use their locations in any scenes. I also figured that they could screen the film at their clubs. I’m not sure if they could financially assist but they might be able to with locations.

[14:40] Keep in mind what role a partnership would take in the process. Again, we can’t have a sponsor taking editorial credit or limiting the release of them film in any way. Other than that, partners are welcomed.

[15:44] Question from Christian Hernandez: Follow up on partnerships: Can I include the non-profits I’m working with as “partners” for outreach, social media, local community groups or organizations?

[15:50] Yes. However, if they are part of production that could possibly raise some red flags.

[16:37] Question from Sabrina to All Panelists: Where and how would the shorts be showcased if they're chosen in the end?

[16:48] Broadcast and Online with PBS, NALIP and World Channel. We will also be screening your film in front of a live audience at the Latino Media Fest during the fall of 2018 here in Los Angeles, CA. We are looking at these short films as multiplatform content.

[20:51] Question from Eddie Zapata to All Panelists: Is it possible for someone to apply for both a documentary and narrative proposal? Or limited to choosing one over the other?

[21:04] You are not limited but we highly recommend to focus and develop one over the other.

[23:33] Question from galvanrc to All Panelists: Sorry if you've discussed - I joined late.  Length of these, looking for anything in particular?  Story about graduated dreamers?  Feel good stories, etc.?

[23:45] Question from Christian Hernandez to All Panelists: TWO Questions: I’m working with kids that are spread across the country, does this hinder my proposal?  Also, do the characters/subjects in the documentary have to be Latino kids?

[24:00] There is no specific narrative that we are looking for. This opportunity is open nationwide so you don’t have to focus on any U.S. region in particular. You are not required to focus your film on Latinx subjects. However, keep in mind that NALIP’s mission is to uplift Latinx voices within the media. Having Latinxs in your crew and/or as subjects can factor into our decision. It all depends on your pitch. 

[27:32] Question from Christian Hernandez to All Panelists: How are the funds allocated once we receive the grant?

[29:26] Question from Christian Hernandez to All Panelists: Do we receive the 20k all at once or in stages?

[27:44] This will depend on each project and your budget. You will more than likely not receive it all at once. This is a co-production grant. We will develop your budget according to your production timeline.

[33:42] Question from Christian Hernandez to All Panelists : Can I list all of my team. For example: Myself, Producer, DP, Post-Producer?

[33:50] Yes. We would love to get to know you and your team. This is a collaborative effort all around.

[35:18] Question from Christian Hernandez to All Panelists : Can we enter the grant as a production company versus just as a person? Thanks!

[35:23] You might have a company behind you but we still want to get to know the person that will be leading this.
