Conference VI Overview


The National Association of Latino Independent Producers’ Conference VI: Catch the Latino Wave runs March 3–6, 2005 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach, CA.

Time Warner, HBO and the National Latino Media Council present this year’s Conference, chaired by Si TV Founder and successful television producer (Brothers Garcia) Jeff Valdez, and founding NALIP Board member/AIVF Executive Director Bienvenida Matias.


This year’s Gala Award for Lifetime Achievement as a Producer goes to esteemed documentary maker Lourdes Portillo (Senorita Extraviada).The NALIP Lifetime Achievement Award for Advocacy goes to NCLR Founder Raul Yzaguirre. And Outstanding Achievement Award goes to Jeff Valdez, for his 2004 founding of Si TV, the first English-language Latino cable channel.

In 2005, NALIP brings together the field of Latino/a film, television, documentary and new media producers, directors, writers, performers, funders, educators, advocates, curators and students to celebrate the Latino Wave, collaborate and examine roadblocks to our progress. Our mission is simple: promote the advancement, development and funding of Latino/a film and media arts in all genres.As professionals, we unite to create more images by and about Latinos everywhere you see media.”

Our 2004 Conference was held in Santa Barbara, California and included participants attended by more than 500 speakers and participants from 26 States, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Spain. Speakers included Chris Albrecht (HBO), Luca Bentivoglio (LPB), Jeff Valdez (SITV), Moctesuma Esparza (Selena, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) and Dennis Leoni (Resurrection Blvd.). The Gala Awards Evening included a pre-taped acceptance speech from Media Advocate and former Young Lord, Richie Perez for his Achievement in Advocacy, the Pioneer Achievement for producing to Aida Barrera (Carrascolendas) and the Outstanding Achievement in Producing to Salma Hayek (Frida).

NALIP's mission is to promote the advancement, development and funding of Latino and Latina film and media arts in all genres.

NALIP’s Board of Directors included Eddie Borges, Moctesuma Esparza, Evy Ledesma Galan, Sonia Gonzalez, Evangeline Griego, Cynthia Lopez, Jose Martinez Jr., Frances Negron-Muntaner, David Ortiz, Edwin Pagan, Luis Perez-Tolon and Rick Ramirez.

NALIP’s staff includes Executive Director Kathryn Galan, Membership Services Coordinator Jose Murillo, Conference Coordinator Tery Lopez, Conference and Latino Media Market Production Manager, Erick C. Garcia and Signature Programs Director Octavio Marin.
