NALIP 10: A Decade of Influence presents a special session with award winning playwright, novelist and screenwriter Josefina López. Sign up now for this unique two-hour story brainstorming workshop with an acclaimed writer and teacher. Josefina López is best known for authoring the play and coauthoring the film Real Women Have Curves, a coming-of-age story about Ana, a first-generation Chicana torn between pursuing her college ambitions, a personal goal, and securing employment, which is a family expectation. Along the way, Ana confronts a host of cultural assumptions about beauty, marriage, and a woman’s role in society. Although Real Women Have Curves is Ms.López’s most recognized work, it is only one of many literary works she has created since she began her writing career, at seventeen. Josefina is also a poet, performer, designer, lecturer of Women’s Studies, and Chicano theater and film. She is the founder of “Casa 0101Theater Art Space” in Boyle Heights, where she teaches screenwriting and playwriting and nurtures a new generation of Latino artists. Josefina is presently workshopping the musical version of Real Women Have Curves, and writing her second novel You’ll Never Eat Tacos in This Town Again. She just finished her latest work Trio Los Machos, a play about three bachelor men in their seventies who play in a guitar trio who met while participating in the Bracero Program.

 Call for Submissions: CPB/PBS Producers Academy 2009 Scholarship
CPB and PBS are offering scholarships for 20 filmmakers to attend the CPB/PBS Producers Academy Workshop to be held at the studios of WGBH Boston, from Saturday, June 20 through Friday, June 26, 2009. The scholarship includes the cost of the workshop, accommodations and travel expenses.
Over a seven-day period, participants in the Producers Workshop will attend an intensive course that covers a range of production skills and draws on the expertise that has made PBS a recognized force on the American cultural landscape. The goal of the Producers Workshop is to encourage a diverse and talented group of producers who will create new and greater programming achievements in public broadcasting.
All interested applicants must complete and submit the application by 5:00 pm eastern on Friday, April 3, 2009. Further details and application form can be found at:

 NALIP Congratulates Congresswoman Hilda Solis as First Latina to Hold a Cabinet Postion: New Secretary of Labor
Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis made history today as the first Latina to be nominated and confirmed as a secretary in a Presidential cabinet. Secretary Solis was confirmed today, February 24, 2009 after a vote of 80-18. First elected in 2000, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis is serving her fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She represents California's 32nd Congressional District, which includes portions of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Prior to her election to Congress, Solis served eight years in the California state legislature. In August 2000, Solis became the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her pioneering work on environmental justice issues in California.
In 2003, she became the first Latina appointed to the powerful Committee on Energy and Commerce where she is the Vice Chair of the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee and a member of the Health and Telecommunications Subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources. In March 2007, Solis was named a member of the newly created House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.
Solis is Vice Chair of the Democratic Steering & Policy Committee and serves as a Senior Whip, as well as a Regional Whip for Southern California. She is also serving her third term as the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' Task Force on Health and the Environment.In 2007, Solis was appointed to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well as the Mexico – United States Interparliamentary Group.
 New Flaherty Seminar Fellowships Announced
The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar is very pleased to announce new fellowship opportunities funded by LEF New England for New England filmmakers, The Philadelphia Foundation for Philadelphia-area film students and professionals, and the Leo Dratfield Endowment for a mid-career programmer.
Each year the Flaherty offers fellowships to students and emerging and mid-career filmmakers and film professionals who would be unable to attend the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar without financial support. The fellowship program is designed to promote diversity within the participant pool, which is essential in providing the unique critical experience of the Seminar. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty fellows take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance, including programmers, writers, and academics. Fellows arrive on campus a day before the Seminar begins to learn about the history of the Seminar, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss each other's films, by way of an informal "Fellows Film Festival." Fellows will be able to return home with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

LEF New England, a regional office of the LEF Foundation, is supporting the participation of six New England-area filmmakers to attend the Seminar. Through a grant from the Philadelphia Foundation, fellowships are now available for six Philadelphia-area film students or professionals. The award covers the registration fee (which includes room, board, and all special events throughout the week) and all travel costs in getting to Colgate University.
Leo Dratfield Fellowship:
The Flaherty is proud to offer a Leo Dratfield Fellowship to a mid-career programmer. The award covers the full registration fee and is funded by the Leo Dratfield Endowment which seeks to recognize and support programmers who are creative in their programming or selection of non-theatrical material. The Leo Dratfield Endowment was founded as a charitable and educational fund whose purpose was to advance the appreciation and recognition of those films and videos commonly referred to as non-theatrical and independent.

Professional Development Fellowships:
The Professional Development Fellowship is designed for emerging or mid-career professionals such as filmmakers, programmers, writers, scholars, archivists, and media professionals, from both the U.S. and abroad. Student Fellowships:
Student fellowships are open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a degree program. All majors are welcome; we select a diverse array of students from throughout the U.S., as well as internationally. Awards are partial grants that cover a portion of the registration fee. Financial Grants Available:
Employees of New York State Non-Profit organizations focusing on media arts may apply for a grant to attend the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar through the Experimental Television Center.
