NALIP Members Receive Imagen Award Nominations
The Imagen Foundation has announced the nominees for the 23rd Annual Imagen Awards, taking place on Thursday, August 21 at 7 PM in Beverly Hills. Several NALIP members and Estela winners are among the nominees and Achievement Award recipients.
"I am consistently amazed with the exponential growth in both the quantity and quality of the entries we receive each year," stated Helen Hernandez, Founder of The Imagen Foundation and creator of the pioneering Imagen Awards, which annually draws A-list stars and luminaries from the world of Latino entertainment. "The increase of Latino representation across entertainment disciplines is truly indicative of the prevalent role we play in Hollywood, mainstream America, and throughout the world."
The Imagen Foundation will bestow the Lifetime Achievement Award to actor Tony Plana; the Creative Achievement Award to HBO's “In Treatment” Producer/Director and NALIP 2006 Feature Estela Award winner, Rodrigo Garcia; and the Norman Lear Writer's Award to Ligiah Villalobos, Executive Producer and writer of the feature film LA MISMA LUNA. Ligiah Villalobos received the 2008 NALIP Outstanding Achievement Award.

LATV, the nation's first bilingual entertainment/music network distributed via digital multicast, plans to air a one-hour special on their channel featuring the Red Carpet arrival and behind-the-scenes exclusives of nominated Latinos at the 23rd Annual Imagen Awards.
The Imagen Foundation, best known for its annual Imagen Awards which honors positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino cultures in television and film, was established in 1985. Imagen serves as a bridge between the Latino community and the entertainment industry to provide, access, education, and resources to Latinos in the industry and those looking for careers in entertainment.

Call for Submissions: Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program - Stories of Change
The Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program and the Skoll Foundation have partnered in a three-year initiative to explore how independent feature-length documentary film can advance knowledge about social entrepreneurship.
The Stories of Change Fund will consider independent feature-length documentary projects in all categories of development, production and post-production. Completed films are note eligible. Film projects must be completed by 2010. Grant awards will be made on a case-by-case basis and may range up to $150,000 US per film.
Request for Proposals: Seeking proposals for documentary films that combine the art of storytelling with topics in the field of social entrepreneurship.

NALIP Miami Chapter & The 3rd Palm Beach International Latin Film Festival present their first workshop "Production And Distribution Of Hispanic Movies"
NALIP Miami Chapter will be part, once more, of another important film festival in Florida, the "3rd Palm Beach International Latin Film Festival", that will take place from July 24th to 27 in West Palm Beach, FL.
"Production and Distribution of Hispanic Movies", a Worshop presented by NALIP Miami Chapter, Florida Media Market, CPA Films and Gran Cine will take place on July 25th, 2 PM at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts, West Palm Beach, FL.
In the workshop, three experts will provide the right information and necessary guides to be part of the film industry or to capitalize your films in the market of hispanic movies.

The Summer Conservatory at THE NEW LATC has been developed under the leadership of UCLA Professor Jose Luis Valenzuela, to create an opportunity for high school students to experience and train in a conservatory setting. This program will integrate acting classes with rigorous physical training in Voice, Speech, Movement, writing, improvisation and culminate in a final performance on THE NEW LATC stag e. THE NEW LATC Summer Conservatory is recommended for teens ready to delve into the art of theater performance. This 10-day intensive program promises to be exciting and fun!
All chosen participants who are in need of financial aid will receive a full scholarship to attend the conservatory. No chosen participant will be turned away for lack of funds.

Jose Luis Valenzuela - Artistic Director of the Latino Theater Company and a Professor of Drama at UCLA where he teaches the MFA Directing Program. Internationally, Mr. Valenzuela has directed Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen at the Norland Theatre in Norway; Manuel Puig's Kiss of The Spider Woman at the National Theatre of Norway and has assisted his mentor, Stein Winge, with Hamlet, The Glass Menagerie, Barrabas, Pantagleize, Die Walkurie, The Inspector General and The Wild Duck. His U.S. stage credits include Dementia (Evelina Fernandez) (2002 GLAAD Award) and Luminarias (Evelina Fernandez) for The Latino Theater Company at The Los Angeles Theatre Center, Journey to Cordoba, with music by Lee Holdrige and Richard Sparks, for the Los Angeles Opera, Carpa Clash (Culture Clash) at The Mark Taper Forum. Other credits include La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inanztin (Latino Theater Company) at Our Lady of The Angels Cathedral, La Virgen del Tepeyac (Luis Valdez) at Saint Alphonsus Church and the Million Dollar Theater; How Else Am I Supposed To Know I'm Still Alive?; and Premeditation (Evelina Fernandez), for The Latino Theater Company, Melancholia (LTC Laboratory at LATC). His film directing credits include the award-winning film Luminarias for Sleeping Giant Productions and Distributed by New Latin Pictures. How Else Am I Supposed To Know I'm Still Alive? for Universal's Hispanic Film Project, Una Vez Al Año Para Toda Una Vida, La Redada and A Bowl of Beings, for PBS' Great Performances. Mr. Valenzuela was honored with the 2003 Hispanic Heritage Month Local Hero of the Year Award sponsored by Union Bank and KCET, Los Angeles. This award recogniz es distinguished citizens for their contributions to improving the quality of life throughout their respective communities. Most recently, Jose Luis directed staged readings of Liz Estrada in the City of Angels at the Getty Villa and at the LATC.
Evelina Fernandez - Actor/Writer - Evelina is an award-winning actor and writer and a founding member of the Latino Theater Company. LTC productions: Luminarias, August 29, Stone Wedding, Roosters, La Victima - at LATC. Other stage credits: King Lear, Etta Jenks, Zoot Suit and more. Film: American Me, Luminarias, A Million to Juan and more. TV credits: Roseanne, Judging Amy, City of Angels, Sparks, Brothers Garcia to name a few. Writing credits: Stage - How Else Am I Supposed to Know I'm Still Alive? (Published in Contemporary Plays by Women of Color; Routledge Press), Premeditation, Luminarias, Dementia, L.A. Carmen, Liz Estrada in the City of Angels. Film: Luminarias, Our Lady of Tarzana (Columbia Tri-Star); TV: Marcy, Por Vida (Disney), Two Funny Guys (ABC/Olmos Productions), American Family (PBS), The Misadventures of Maya & Miguel (Scholastics Entertainment). Awards: Best Actress - Festival IberoAmericano de Huelva, Spain (Luminarias); Golden Eagle Award (Performance - American Me) (Outstanding Writer - Luminarias) and the Alma Award (Performance - Hollywood Confidential). She has received recognitions from numerous arts and community organizations including Women in Film & Video, City of Los Angeles, City of San Francis co, Hispanic Media Coalition, Comision Feminil and many more. In 2003 her stage play Dementia was honored with the prestigious GLAAD Award (Outstanding Theater Production in Los Angeles). Her screen adaptation of Dementia is currently in post-production with an expected release date in 2009. In 2007 Evelina was a finalist for the Humanitas Prize and received honors from the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival and Playwrights Arena.
Lupe Ontiveros - Actor/Producer -Lupe is a well-known stage, television and screen actress as well as a producer and Community Activist. She is best known for her comedic/dramatic role as La Nacha in the Oscar nominated film EL NORTE, for which she gained international recognition. Originally from El Paso, Texas, she began as an extra in 1972 and soon after, launched an impressive film career as a "working actress" proudly portraying Latino mothers and maids. Lupe's stage work includes most notably the Los Angeles, New York, and film productions of Luis Valdez' Zoot Suit, where she created the role of Dolores, the first Chicana mother on the Broadway stage. Her film credits include Picking Up The Pieces with Woody Allen directed by Alfonso Arau, Blessed Art Thou directed by Tim Disney, Chuck and Buck, directed by Miguel Arteta, As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson, directed by James R. Brooks, The Brave directed by Johnny Depp, Mi Familia, directed by Gregory Nava and Selena, also directed by Gregory Nava. Lupe also starred in an HBO f eature Real Women Have Curves directed by Patricia Cardosa. Her countless television credits include pilots and series regular appearances such as Veronica's Closet for CBS, where she was a recurring Guest Star. She just finished filming a movie for VH1, 30 Days Until I'm Famous, directed by Gabriela Tagliavani, and she is currently working on an animated PBS series, The Adventures of Maya and Miguel.
As a producer, Lupe produced Una Vez Al Año Para Toda Una Vida, an award winning educational film in Spanish, focusing on the need for awareness regarding breast cancer in Latinas. Among the many awards she has received are the Nosotros Golden Eagle Award, the ALMA Award and The Special Jury at The Sundance Film Festival awarded Lupe Best Dramatic Actress for her role in Real Women Have Curves.
Sal Lopez - Actor/Producer - Mr. Lopez is a founding member of the Latino Theater Company. Some of his theater credits include Dementia, A Midsummer Night Dream, Selena: A Musical Celebration Of Life, La Posada Magica, Premeditation, Blade To The Heat, August 29th, Bandido, La Victima, La Virgen De Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin, Corridos Tales Of Passion And Revolution, and Zoot Suit. Mr. Lopez also co-produced Luminarias as a play before bringing it to the big screen. Sal, together with Jose Luis Valenzuela and Evelina Fernandez created Sleeping Giant Productions to produce and star in Luminarias. Mr. Lopez and other company memebers created Burro Squad Productions and are currently20in post production on their new film About Truth And Lies (Dementia). Sal has been in over 40 films including The Astronaut Farmer, John Sayles Silver City, Paparrazzi, The Banger Sisters, Full Metal Jacket, The Price Of Glory, Selena, American Me, Born In East L.A. etc. His television credits are numerous and include Comanche Moon, Nip/Tuck, CSI, ER,Touched by An Angel and others..
Geoffrey Rivas - Actor/Producer A native Californian, graduated from UCLA in 1985 with a Master of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration on acting. Mr. Rivas received a 1999 Ovation nomination for his role of Martin in Sam Shepard's Fool for Love at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. Geoffrey has performed at the LATC in Luminarias (Evelina Fernandez), I Don't Have To Show You No Stinking Badges (Luis Valdez), and Piano (Anna Devere-Smith). Mr. Rivas has also performed at South Coast Rep in Man of the Flesh (Octavio Solis) and at New Mexico Rep in Once Removed (Eduardo Machado). Mr. Rivas' film credits include Under the Tuscan Sun, Dragonfly, Luminarias, La Bamba, Born in East L.A., Pow Wow Highway, Bound By Honor, Above Suspicion, Notes From Underground, Eye for an Eye, The Right To Remain Silent and Foto Novelas for PBS, for which he won an ALMA award in 1998. Geoffrey has numerous television credits including MOW's in which he is currently working on such as Hallmarks Road to Redemption, Path to 9-11, Little Assassin, DrugWars-The Kiki Camarena Story, Overkill, Blind Side, Ambush at Waco, Trial by Fire . The Lake. Among T.V. shows, Mr. Rivas has a recurring role as Det.Vega on the CBS show C.S.I. He also has appeared on Lost, Numbers, Cold Case, Grey's Anatomy, Nip/Tuck, Jake And The Fat Man, L.A. Law, E.R., Relativity, Chicago Hope, Brooklyn South, Alright Already, Early Edition, Pensacola, Air America and Promised Land.
Lucy Rodriguez - Actor/Producer Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Lucy has been working professionally in L.A. since 1986. She is an active member of the Latino Theater Company (LTC) with which she has been affiliated since 1988. As an LTC member she co-produces the pageant play La Virgen de Guadalupe: Dios Inantzin that is presented annually at Cathedral Our Lady of the Angels in downtown L.A. She has also produced several workshop presentations including L.A. Carmen at the John Anson Ford. Past theatre credits include: Dementia, La Virgen de Guadalupe: Dios Inantzin, Man of the Flesh and A Christmas Carol at South Coast Repertory, ¡Bocon! and La Llorona at Mark Taper Forum, August 29 and The Promise at Los Angeles Theatre Center, and Real Women Have Curves at San Diego Repertory. Television credits include recurring roles on ER and Sunset Beach. Other television credits include X-Files, Kingpin, Charmed; Feature films include Species, Deception, and Alvarez and Cruz. Lucy's theatre training includes three years at Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles, and intensive study with Andy Kossin and Sandy Marshall. She also has a bachelor's de gree in English-Communication Arts from St. Mary's University. She looks forward to finishing the film version of Dementia, and to the opening of the new Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) next year.
Courses will be taught by Artistic Director Jose Luis Valenzuela and members of the Latino Theater Company, including: Evelina Fernandez, Lucy Rodriguez, Sal Lopez, Lupe Ontiveros, and Geoffrey Rivas. Several master classes will be taught by special guest artists TBA.
