Nicolás Pereda's fiercely disquieting debut immediately places him in the ranks of countrymen Carlos Reygadas and Alejandro González Iñárritu as a gifted chronicler of a Mexico reeling with petty injustice and irrevocably separated into rural and urban classes. The deceptively simple story of Vicente, a young man trying to save his grandmother's land from her avaricious sons, is patiently deepened by Pereda's mesmerizing long takes and keen eye for emotional detail. Completed with minimal means but maximum intensity, the film presents a world where everything and everyone is for sale, but where grace can still be found in the spaces between.

Swear-A-Long Scarface
Director: Brian De Palma
Friday, June 20, 8:30 p.m., Ford Amphitheatre
Two-hundred-and-twenty-six. That's how many times Al Pacino, in his iconic role as Miami gangster Tony Montana, and his fellow cast members say-ahem-well, drop the F-bomb. And that's just one word. There's plenty of other creative cursing in Scarface, Brian De Palma's coked-out opera of excess, hubris, and foul language. Featuring Pacino at his most baroquely brilliant, tearing into the machismo of Oliver Stone's screenplay, De Palma's film has become a cultural touchstone. Its influence on gangsta rap and hip-hop culture cannot be overstated, and everyone from Homer Simpson to Bill O'Reilly has been heard to quote the film.
Cinematic Titanic - THE WASP WOMAN
Saturday, June 21, 8:30p.m., Ford Amphiteater
Comedian and Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson has reunited with fellow Satellite of Love alums Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl to form Cinematic Titanic. They will be live June 21 at the Ford Amphitheater skewering Roger Corman's 1959 non-classic The Wasp Woman.
Named by TV Guide as one of the best cult TV shows ever, Mystery Science Theater 3000 premiered in 1988 and quickly grew to become a fan phenomenon, hailed as the most original and hilarious show on TV. Now, 20 years later, comedian and MST3K's creator Joel Hodgson has reunited with fellow Satellite of Love alums Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl to form Cinematic Titanic. In this new comedic venture, the five—seen once again in silhouette in front of some of the worst B-movies you've never heard of—let loose with a rapid-fire running commentary of wisecracks, jokes, and non-sequiturs aimed at the screen and each other.
For this special live performance, the Cinematic Titanic crew will skewer Roger Corman's 1959 non-classic The Wasp Woman. Replete with bad acting, bad dialogue, and oh-so-bad special effects, it's the perfect comic fodder for Hodgson and his companions, who will turn this perfectly dreadful movie into an absolutely delightful evening.
Highwater
Director: Dana Brown
Sunday, June 22, 8:30p.m., Ford Amphitheater
Equal measures a portrait of a distinctly Hawaiian way of life and an incredible surf documentary, Highwater profiles the men and women who gather every year on Oahu's North Shore for big-wave surfing's ultimate challenge, the Triple Crown. As surfers face turquoise waves reaching 30 feet or more into the sky, Dana Brown, director of the pulse-quickening Step Into Liquid, vividly captures the action of the competition while celebrating the close-knit community of surfers, a rich mix of fans, champions, up-and-comers, families, and living legends.
Featuring surfing legends: Kelly Slater, Tom Curren, Rochelle Ballard, Andy Irons, Jon Jon Florence, Carrissa Moore, Malik Joyeux, Mark Healy, Poncho Sullivan, Kalani Chapman, Sunny Garcia, Pat O'Connell, Sofia Mulanovich, Chelsea Georgeson.
