 Now Accepting Submissions for Its Annual Directors Lab in Los Angeles!
Running in the spring of 2008, the Lab is an intensive seven-week program designed to help directors develop their craft.
Under the guidance of the Lab Instructor, participants go through production—casting, rehearsing, shooting, and editing—of selected scenes from their feature length screenplays. Participants learn how to break down a script into a shot list, collaborate with cinematographers, work with actors, and construct a scene in the editing process. We provide the participants with camera and sound packages to shoot their scenes.
A secondary goal of the program is to introduce the directors in the program to film professionals who can advise them on both the craft and business of filmmaking as they move towards getting their features made. Lab fellows have one-on-one meetings with established directors, producers, and other industry professionals who act as advisors on the participants’ projects.
Filmmakers accepted into the Lab also receive a complimentary pass to Film Independent’s Director Series, which runs concurrently, and also receive a free one-year membership with Film Independent.
Past Lab Instructors include Allison Anders (Things Behind the Sun), Tony Drazan (Hurlyburly), Rodrigo García (Nine Lives), Keith Gordon (Waking the Dead), Greg Harrison (November), Charlie Herman-Wurmfeld (Kissing Jessica Stein), Nicole Holofcener (Friends With Money), and Jeremy Podeswa (Fugitive Pieces).

Join leading players in theatrical, television and DVD distribution and exhibition who will unravel the mysteries for the independent filmmaker. In this frank discussion, you will learn about options that are available to you when your film doesn't sell outright to a major distributor -- how it all works, what it costs and what you as the filmmaker needs to know. Educate yourself about booking, figures for spending and earning on a film, what it costs to advertise, what is expected by the exhibitor (theatre), what materials you will you need (including legal agreements) before you are ready to sell or exhibit your film. There will also be discussion of the future of theatrical film distribution and current trends. The audience will follow the process of distribution through the various phases.

The Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza (BHLIFE), the first festival with all an Latina filmmaker line up, is back for its third year and it will take place December 7th, 8th and 9th. Founded by one of the most successful Latina writers of our generation, Josefina Lopez (writer Real Women Have Curves), BHLIFE aims to build a network of Latina filmmakers that will draw attention to the growing number of Latinas working behind the camera. The films of these Latinas constitute a body of work that acts as a powerful statement against the stereotypical portrayals of Latinas on screen, said Lopez. The festival will take place at Theatre CASA 0101 at 2009 East 1st St. 90033, Boyle Heights .
BHLIFE is a celebration of Latinas, their voices and their visions. BHLIFE is a festival that features the creative work of Latina film directors from all across the country. An event dedicated to the ongoing effort to represent the complexities of our community and the women within it.
The opening film will be "The Man of Two Havanas", by writer/ director Vivien Lesnik Weisman. The opening night Gala will take place at the brand new Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center, which is operated by the Youth Opportunity Movement (LAYOM) located at 1600 East 4th St , Los Angeles, CA .

Please join us for the Staged Reading of our award-winning screenplay, featuring outstanding actors: Lupe Ontiveros (Tortilla Heaven, Real Women Have Curves, Selena), Richard Yniguez (B Girl, Meet Me in Miami, Boulevard Nights), Omar Chagall (Frida, The Argentine), Lidia Pires (Ladrón Que Roba a Ladrón) and Yvette Yates as Soledad.
