The subtle socioeconomic clashes between groups, as well as between siblings, are both comic and intense. Garcia Bernal makes his directorial debut in this beautifully nuanced portrait of modern Mexican youth.

 Tampa Continues to Showcase US Independent Films Featuring a Latin Beat.
With a nod to its Hispanic heritage, the Gasparilla Film Festival presents by Wachovia will take place from Wednesday, February 27th- Sunday, March 2nd, 2008.
The 5 day Festival will showcase more than 50 films and shorts in the following categories:
Latin Panorama - a broad range of top Latin independent films
Extreme and Action Sports- wild thrills and adrenaline-pumping action
Fun & Fear - a mix of comedies and horrors
Short Films - including family- friendly and music video
Special Screenings - Featured American indies
The Festival will be juried by reputable filmmakers and journalists who are industry professionals. Separate juries will be used for both the Latin Panorama section and the Extreme/Action Sports section.
Jury and Audience Awards will honor the following categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture -Short, Best Picture - Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Latin Film, Best Ensemble Cast, Best Homegrown Music Video, and the Young Filmmaker Award. Other award categories will also be presented at Closing Night Ceremonies at the Florida Aquarium on Sunday, March 2nd, 2008.
The Festival will take place at venues in and surrounding Ybor City - Tampa’s National Historic District and Latin Quarter. The Festival will begin its celebration of independent film with a VIP reception and Preview Party at Tampa’s historic Tampa Theatre, a nationally recognized historical landmark

Calling all Zoot Suiters! A 30th anniversary celebration of the landmark play that shattered the glass ceiling for Latinos in the entertainment industry and became the first Chicano play on Broadway will be held on April 6, 2008, at Pomona College, in Claremont, CA. The reunion of the cast from the original 1978 Zoot Suit stageproductions and 1981 movie will be the capstone event of two-weeks of student performances of Luis Valdez’s masterpiece of the American Theater canon, Zoot Suit. Additional campus and citywide celebrations will be announced.
The Zoot Suit Tribute event, hosted by the Pomona College Alumni Association in conjunction with the Latino/a Alumni of Pomona College (LAPC), will celebrate the play’s pivotal historical significance and honor playwright and director Luis Valdez (El Teatro Campesino, Zoot Suit, La Bamba) and other Zoot Suit alumni for their contributions to the arts, the farm workers struggle and social justice. “The Pomona College Alumni Association is proud to sponsor this event and recognize Luis and other distinguished Zoot Suit alumni like Rose Portillo, an original cast member and one of our own from the class of ’75,” said Carlos Garcia, president of the Pomona College Alumni Association.
On April 2-13, Zoot Suit will be performed by students from The Claremont Colleges and produced by the Pomona College Theatre & Dance Department. Pomona College Professor Alma Martinez, Ph.D., an actor in the original play and film will direct the play.
Under Valdez’s pen, Zoot Suit took two of the most infamous moments in Los Angeles history, the Zoot Suit Riots and Sleepy Lagoon Murder case, and re-envisioned these events as pinnacles of community organizing, pride and celebration. Premiering in 1978 at the Mark Taper Forum, Zoot Suit broke all existing box office records and introduced Hollywood to some of the highest profile Latinos in the industry today: Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Gallactica and Walkout), Tony Plana, (Ugly Betty and Officer and a Gentleman) and Lupe Ontiveros (Real Women Have Curves and Selena). Other Zoot Suit alumni include industry luminaries Tyne Daly (Judging Amy), Jack Bender (executive director, Lost) Andy Tennant (director, Hitch) and Kurtwood Smith (That 70’s Show).
Zoot Suit cast members are invited to RSVP as soon as possible to reserve tickets for the April 6th Zoot Suit gallery exhibit at 11 am, performance at 1pm and Tribute event at 4 pm. The demand for films has grown exponentially which in turn has caused a need for capital for the production and distribution of film. The studio business historically returns around 10% per year, with the growth of DVD's and On Demand features there is a market for development. One film production company with the aid of hedge funds/private equity raised close to $100 Million for movie projects, with an eye toward making around $20 Million in specialty pictures and or genre productions. With the proliferation of hedge funds and private investors venturing into the film industry a growing global market, and soft money incentives cropping up in almost every corner of the world, making a movie has become more of a jigsaw puzzle than one-stop shopping. In this climate, producers have to be creative in piecing together the big money pie. This conference will give an overview of the issues and provide solutions so that the industry can meet national and international consumer needs.
