Crafting a Great Story: Developing Camera-Ready Scripts
Starts: October 6, 2007
Duration: 10 weeks
Days: Saturdays, 1-5pm
Location: UCLA campus, Room TBA
Instructor: Harrison Reiner
Max Enrollment: 10 students
Contact: (310) 825-6124
This intensive workshop gives students the opportunity to work side-by-side with a professional story analyst/writer-producer in a highly supportive environment. The instructor supervises the students as they craft stories that can emotionally engage a motion picture or television audience and have the best chance to sell in a highly competitive marketplace. This highly individualized workshop is designed to meet the differing needs of each participant. The instructor will take into account how far along in the story development process each project is, from an as-yet unwritten idea to a finished screenplay with story problems. Both original ideas and projects based on underlying material are welcome. One-on-one consultations with the instructor and off-campus focus groups are available and complement the workshop experience. Students may repeat the workshop with the same project until their script is camera-ready.
Instructor Harrison Reiner is a Staff Story Analyst (I.A.T.S.E.) for CBS-Paramount Television, developers of movies and series. Previous positions include Production Executive, Sovereign Pictures (co-distributors of the Academy Award-winning motion pictures My Left Foot and Cinema Paradiso); Story Editor, RKO Pictures (during the filming of John Sayle's Eight Men Out); and Story Analyst for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Feature Animation, and Sherry Lansing Productions in association with Paramount Pictures.
Harrison is a mentor for the Latino Writers Lab (sponsored by Time-Warner, the WGA, and the National Association of Latino Producers), and a mentor and lecturer for the Hollywood Black Film Festival. He is a producer and co-writer of Tierra de Tigres, a feature film shot on location in Mexico and currently in post-production (the script was developed in the Crafting a Great Story workshop).
