Presented In Association with Time Warner Cable
Sí TV’s Latino Laugh Festival, presented in association with Time Warner
Cable of Southern California, hits Hollywood this June with a three-day,
cutting edge showcase of the best in Latino comedy. For the first time in
Los Angeles, this one-of-a-kind festival will feature more than twenty-five
performances at eight prime venues along Hollywood Blvd between Vine St. and
La Brea Ave. All proceeds of the 2007 Latino Laugh Festival will benefit
First Star, a non-profit organization that works to improve change the U.S.
child welfare system to increase the level of protection and support all
children deserve.
A hallmark event for Sí TV, America’s first and only television network to
target the millions of 18–34-year old Latinos who prefer their entertainment
in English, the Latino Laugh Festival in previous years has served as a
launching pad for many of the country’s top Latino comedians, including
Carlos Mencia, Gabriel Iglesias and Joey Medina.
“Sí TV understands young Latinos and their desire for compelling,
culturally-relevant entertainment content, especially irreverent and clever
comedy, which is a key ingredient in our programming,” said Michael
Schwimmer, CEO of Sí TV. “The Latino Laugh Festival also gives us an
opportunity to partner with Time Warner Cable and deliver this marquee event
that combines high value entertainment with grass roots marketing.”
Thanks to the generous support of title sponsor Time Warner Cable, this
year’s Latino Laugh Festival comes to the heart of Los Angeles from its
previous home in San Antonio, Texas.
“Time Warner Cable is excited to bring such a high quality, high energy
event to the Los Angeles Hispanic community, said Jeffrey Hirsch, President,
Time Warner Cable Metro Division. “With Sí TV and First Star as partners,
Time Warner Cable can enhance the communities in which we live and work –
one laugh at a time.”
As founder of Sí TV and creator of the Latino Laugh Festival, Jeff Valdez, a
former comedian himself, has been the driving force behind the success and
growth of the Festival over the years. Returning to work with Valdez are
Executive Producers Giselle Fernandez and Barry Kearson who are creatively
involved in all aspects of the Festival.
“The Festival provided the building blocks for what eventually became Sí TV
and has earned its rank as the premiere showcase for Latino comedians. I’m
really excited about the great lineup and unique shows we have for this
year,” states Valdez.

**22 filmmakers and media artists receive nearly $750,000**
May 2, 2007 (New York, NY) – In a ceremony last night at the American Academy of Art, Renew Media announced the recipients of the Media Arts fellowships for 2007, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, awarding nearly $750,000 to 22 innovative and pioneering filmmakers and media artists. Film producer Jim McKay (Brother to Brother, Stranger Inside) joined Renew Media representatives in handing out the fellowships to some of the most promising and respected independent filmmakers working today, including Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy), Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation), Rob Epstein (The Times of Harvey Milk), Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi), and Ken Jacobs (Tom, Tom, The Piper’s Son).
The Fellowships recognize the artistic excellence of 20 film, video and new media artists in the United States with cash awards of $35,000 each. The program also awards two additional Fellowships of $10,000 each to emerging film and video artists. The Fellowships are intended to provide support to filmmakers and media artists whose work represents creative risk-taking – pushing the boundaries of genre, form, technique, medium, and content – as well as social and political relevance. Renew Media also awards between four and six Fellowships of $20,000 each to Mexican filmmakers and media artists.
“We are inspired by the breadth of innovation and creativity of this year’s Fellows. From emerging artists to those more established in their careers, they represent some of the most talented individuals currently working in the independent media field in the United States,” said Brian Newman, executive director of Renew Media. “Often, the Fellowship award represents the crucial ‘first money’ given in support of a project. We look forward to seeing the continued success of the artists awarded Fellowships tonight. We also applaud the Rockefeller Foundation for its 20 years of visionary support of the media arts, which has assisted nearly 500 artists in the creation of important works of film, video and new media.”
Further information can be found at www.renewmedia.org.
