I have sad news for the independent media community. Natatcha Estébanez, Puerto Rican filmmaker and public television producer, died last weekat her home in Boston.
I want to tell you a little bit about Natatcha because she was one of the original founders of NALIP back in its genesis. When the East Coast filmmakers and media activists began emailing each other regarding the need to communicate with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting regarding the defunding of the Latino consortium at the time (the National Latino Communications Center), Natatcha was a pivotal participant. When we got to the point where we began communication with West Coast producers, Natatcha, who served on the ITVS board intervened. She convinced ITVS to invest in the nascent grouping of Latino producers so that we could meet face to face. She never attended the meetings but it was her critical and timely intervention that helped get us in face-to-face meetings in Los Angeles which ultimately led to the formation of NALIP in 1999.
She produced and wrote "The Blue Diner" a feature narrative film about Puerto Ricans in Boston. She worked at La Plaza at WGBH for many years and most recently was working at WGBH with a children's series.
For many years, she served on the National Coalition for Independent Broadcasting Producers which continues to seat the ITVS Board of Directors. She served with distinction on the ITVS board of directors for a full term.
She leaves behind many, many loved ones who will grieve her passing and celebrate her rich and vibrant life.

Natatcha Estébanez was a Boston-based, award-winning filmmaker who spent more than nearly two decades producing, directing and writing films and programs for television. Her first feature film, the critically acclaimed The Blue Diner, won the prestigious Alma Award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture. The film aired on HBO and broadcast on PBS in 2003. Natatcha worked on the PBS series Race: The Power of an Illusion. She produced and directed 12 films for the favorite Poem Project for PBS, as well as four films for the Discovery channel and the Animal planet channel. She also worked with Henry Hampton, founder of Blackside, Inc. and creator of the acclaimed series Eyes On The Prize, on BreakThrough, a four part series about the struggles and contributions of multicultural scientists to the scientific field. Her films have won numerous awards including the Gold Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Silver Award from the New York Film and Television Festivals, four regional Emmy Awards, and the Gold Award at the Houston International Film Festival. She was a regular contributor to the WGBH series Greater Boston Arts. Natacha was instrumental in starting the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. She served on the National Coalition for Independent Broadcasting Producers, and served with distinction on the ITVS board of directors.

Squaw Valley Community of Writers Screenwriting Program: August 4 to August 11, 2007
 The Screenwriting Program is an intensive week-long program which focuses on individual attention and work-in-progress, by award-winning writers and writer/directors. Film clips, lectures and writing exercises are incorporated into daily, morning workshops, emphasizing the grammar of film,story development, narrative point of view, character analysis and scene structure. This unique program is designed for screenwriters and filmmakers, as well as fiction writers who wish to translate their work into the film medium.
Space is limited to 25 participants. Tuition is $725.00, which includes 6 evening meals; financial aid is available. Admissions are based on submissions. DEADLINE: May 5.

 Indiefest, The Independent Film Festival, is pleased to announce their 2007 call for entries. Indiefest celebrates the "vision without compromise" spirit of the independent filmmaker. Incorporating a competitive film festival, a screenwriting contest, and a weeklong party, Indiefest brings the world's film community to the beautiful city of Chicago. Indiefest 2007 is scheduled to take place July 26th though August 2nd.
Indiefest 2007 will showcase the best of independent film to the general public, filmmakers, and the media. With more films, events, parties, and the increasing support of major corporations, the media, and the independent film community, Indiefest 2007 will be the "must attend" independent film festival of the year.
Indiefest is eager to showcase emerging talent; therefore there are no strict eligibility requirements. There is one major requirement: films financed or produced by major studios or their affiliates are not eligible. Films and videos of all lengths and genres will be accepted. Screenplays, scripts, novels, and short stories will be accepted into the writing competition, which is presented by the renowned Screenwriter’s Project.
The deadlines for entry are as follows: Early Deadline: February 15, 2007; Regular Deadline: March 15, 2007; Late Deadline: April 1, 2007. Indiefest 2007 also announces the return of the Production Fund Prize Package valued at $300,000+. The Indiefest Vision Award is presented to the filmmaker whose film epitomizes the “Vision Without CompromiseTM” spirit of the independent filmmaker.

A two-day film festival in Coachella on March 23 and 24 will honor the late Lalo Guerrero known as the “father of Chicano music” and showcase the talent of Chicano/Latino filmmakers, musicians and artists
The Lalo Guerrero Film and Arts Festival will begin at 6 p.m. on March 23 with a feature film entitled “Lalo Guerrero:The Original Chicano! produced by Guerrero’s son Dan Guerrero and Nancy De Los Santos, at the UC Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. A gala will follow the screening.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 24, in Pueblo Viejo or downtown Coachella, a series of films will be shown ending with an awards gala at 6 p.m. at Coachella Valley High School.

 DancesWithFilms, the only film festival where an audience can truly “discover” a film that isn’t due to be released next week, opens its doors for submissions. It's an exciting Year 10 with the momentum already building for the best discovery festival in Los Angeles. Named by the Hollywood Reporter as "the defiant fest of raw talent," DWF has showcased more than 800 up and coming filmmakers, their casts and crews. Alumni include great talents such as Will Schaeffer and Mark Olsen (2004), creators of HBO's Big Love series, Dan Harris (1999), writer of X2, Superman Returns; Kathryn Morris (1999), lead actor of CBS's Cold Case to give a few examples. Lauren Moews, 1999 and 2000 alumnus, went on to produce “Cabin Fever,” and has several projects in development.
We are dedicated to finding films the Hollywood industry haven't seen and giving these gems much needed exposure, publicity and opportunity. All films in competition have no known directors, actors, producers, or monies from known sources (i.e. " Imagine"). However we do allow working actors, and can give a special screening to any film that warrants it (as with last year's star-studded alumni film that is sweeping the festival scene, "Mojave Phone Booth") so if you aren't sure just give us a call or email us with your questions.
Submission Deadlines are April 9, 2007 for regular and May 16, 2007 for an extended (late) deadline, for the procrastinators.
