Argentine Hit, Cautiva, Opens in New York and Los Angeles

Cautiva, Gastón Biraben’s internationally acclaimed Argentinean thriller has been a hit on the international film festival circuit winning prizes at San Sebastian (Horizons Award for Best Latin American Film), Toulouse (FIPRESCI International Critics Prize) and Mar de la Plata (Best Film).  Cautiva had its U.S. premiere at the prestigious New Directors/New Films series organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art.  Most recently, Cautiva won two Silver Condor Awards (also known as the Argentine Oscars), the highest award given to cinema in that country.

Cautiva (in Spanish, with English subtitles) is written, produced and directed by Gastón Biraben in a dazzling debut.  The film tells the story of Christina, a typical Argentine teenager.  Her life is suddenly uprooted when she is plucked out of class at the summons of a judge and the couple she knows as her parents are revealed to not be so.  In the early 80s, her biological parents were "disappeared" for criticizing the military junta which had taken power in a coup.  Surviving relatives of her biological parents, including Christina’s grandmother, have spent years trying to track down the child. Ordered to now live with her biological family since her adoption – or appropriation, as it is chillingly called – had no legal basis, Christina begins an investigation of her own in order to find out the truth. Played with an extraordinary gravity by the luminous Bárbara Lombardo in her film debut, the young girl meets others like herself and discovers the real-life horrors of Argentina’s relatively recent history and the nightmare that claimed tens of thousands of lives during the country’s “dirty war.”  A movie about the consequences of both political and psychological repression, Cautiva ultimately personifies the resilience of the human spirit.

Opens in New York November 10th

One-hour Telecast Exposes Trend of Latinos as the Fastest-Growing Ethnic Group in the Military and  Chronicles Personal Experiences of 21 Year-Old Former Marine

Special to Air on November 18 at 10PM

Los Angeles, CA October 30, 2006 – mun2, the preeminent voice for Latino youth in America, will air an in-depth and compelling special report entitled “For My Country? Young Latinos in the Military” on November 18 at 10PM.

The special telecast exposes the trend of Latinos as the fastest growing ethnic group in the military and takes a close look at the options young Latinos in the U.S. face upon graduating high school, with an emphasis on the military and pros and cons of enlistment. The one-hour report chronicles the personal experiences of Mexican-born Diego Sosa since the 21 year-old former high school student enlisted in the Marine Corps, received disablement retirement after undergoing over 50 operations to his leg, and became a purple-heart recipient.

“Considering the ongoing U.S. military campaigns and that young Latinos are the fastest growing demographic in the military, it’s important for us to take a close look at this issue and how it affects our viewers and the community which we represent,” said Alex Pels, General Manager, mun2. “In this special, we hope to shed some light on the choices that young Latinos face when deciding whether to join the military, and at the outcomes of that decision, both good and bad.”

In the piece, Diego shares powerful war stories from the front line and speaks candidly about the psychological toll of war, brotherhood in the military, the support of his family and the benefits received by the government for his service, including obtaining citizenship for his family.

Additional interviews with principals, teachers, career counselors, activists and students help shed light on current and relevant trends of Latinos in the armed forces, including the economic and social factors that drive them to enlist, the recruitment versus counter-recruitment controversy on high school campuses and Latino-targeted recruitment. The documentary-styled piece also offers viewers a realistic comparison of the costs of war in contrast to the benefits offered to new recruits joining the armed forces.

“For My Country? Young Latinos in the Military” is the second installment in a series of news specials created by the network. The first special, entitled “mun2 News Special: Immigration,” debuted on June 10, 2006 and introduced viewers to Fermin, an undocumented high school student from El Salvador trying to secure a future for himself by lobbying legislators.

Originally-produced mun2 news specials will air on a quarterly basis in 2007 as part of the network’s commitment to produce content specifically geared for young Latinos which focuses on the relevant issues that affect them.

"Babel" Bounces To The Top of the BOT; "Queen" Continues Reign
Box Office coverage presented by Rentrak Theatrical
by Steve Rosen (October 31, 2006)

Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Paramount Vantage-released "Babel," a multi-character omnibus drama about the state of the world today, got off to an exceedingly strong start by finishing first on this week's indieWIRE Box Office Tracking Report (iWBOT) of independent/specialty films with a $55,622 average from seven theaters in New York and Los Angeles. But Miramax Films' "The Queen" - previously number one for four weeks - is hardly abdicating. Stephen Frears' speculative take on Queen Elizabeth II's response to Princess Diana's death, starring Helen Mirren, came in second with a $12,560 average at 152 sites. More important, it increased overall business by 26.4% by adding just 53 new theaters and has now grossed $6.29 million from 152 theaters. It is on track to be one of year's biggest indie hits as it starts to expand in earnest. Not destined for such glory, however, is Newmarket Film's controversial "Death of a President." It debuted on the iWBOT with a lowly 23rd ranking.
