My City Now
A National Media Literacy Program Created by City Projects

American Latino TV showcases the My City Now media literacy campaign this Saturday Oct. 21st, 2006 on LATINATION.  (check local listings for station and time in your area)  http://www.aimtvgroup.com/altv/
My City Now kicked off in Nine U.S. cities during Hispanic Heritage Month 2005 with: the re-broadcast of Los Angeles Now anda series of traveling Future Filmmaker Workshops.  These cities included Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego and San Francisco.
My City Now Future Filmmaker Workshops introduced video making skills to high school students in nine U.S. cities with high and rapidly growing Latino populations. These workshops sought to create a multigenerational and multicultural dialogue by engaging and bringing together high school students and senior citizens in a variety of activities that ranged from an open discussion to one-on-one video interviews. The workshops also prepared students with skills needed to create their own 3-minute short documentary about their city for The Future Filmmaker Contest. Thirteen finalists from each city streamed their short documentaries online at www.mycitynow.org for a final online vote during February 2006 for the winning documentaries. Watch the videos today!

My City Now was created by City Projects as a companion outreach program for Producer/Director Phillip Rodriguez’ PBS documentary Los Angeles Now. Both were designed to provoke conversations about the future of our cities among Americans of different generations and ethnicities.

Los Angeles Now is a fascinating look at a city where more than half of the population is Latino and 40 percent are foreign born. The film includes conversations with a broad range of Los Angeles figures, from actor Salma Hayek and sports figure Phil Jackson to renowned author and essayist Richard Rodriguez and Cardinal Roger Mahony.

My City Now is brought to you by City Projects with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and The Skirball Foundation. Travel for the program was provided by Southwest Airlines.
