Independent Lens, “The film festival in your living room,” now brings you “a film festival at your fingertips.”  ITVS and PBS announced today their second annual Independent Lens Online Shorts Festival where independent filmmakers are invited to submit short-form films, 10 minutes or less in length and in all genres.  The submission deadline is Monday, April 23, 2007.
 
All submitted shorts to the Independent Lens Online Shorts Festival will be
screened and reviewed be an esteemed jury of leading independent filmmakers,
interactive producers and industry executives. The grand prize-winning short
film will be awarded $2,500 and a national television premiere on the Emmy
Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens, provided that all PBS broadcast
standards and policies have been met. Ten additional winners will be
showcased on the Independent Lens Web site at PBS.org. Winners will be
announced in Fall 2007.

Professional Latinos in Entertainment Presents Music Supervision and Film Scoring Workshop at this Year’s 10th Annual Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival

This workshop will discuss details of how music is placed in films, acquiring the rights to music and music composition. Filmmakers, Musicians and Songwriters will spend 90 minutes with Music Publishers and Music Supervisors and hear how they seek music and find “that right song” for films and television shows.

The workshop is free and open to anybody who would like to get an insight about Music Scoring and Music Supervision.

Participating in this years workshop are Delia Orjuela, Senior Director, Latin Music, BMI, Los Angeles and Alicen Catron Schneider, Vice President, Music Supervision, NBC Universal Television Music, and moderated by David Jordan, PLIE Co-Founder and President, La Corporación Muzic.

The workshop will be held on Sunday, October 8th, 2006 at The Egyptian Theater, located at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA 90028 at The Expo Tent from 3:00-4:30 PM.

These workshops will provide an outlet for Latino filmmakers to network with other professionals, furthering PLIE’s goal to showcase and encourage these Latino talents. Hispanic Women’s Gathering Draws Big Latino Names

The Hispanic Women’s Corporation (HWC) is hosting the 21st National Hispanic Women’s Conference on Oct. 12-13, at the Phoenix Convention Center. Latina Power: The Billion Dollar Market” is this year’s conference theme. The two-day conference is the largest gathering of Latinas in the country and will provide leadership and professional development to more than 2,000 participants while raising funds for college scholarships to benefit Latinas.

The conference kicks off Oct. 12 with a Youth Leadership Conference targeting approximately 400 local area school students. The Plenary Session will be emceed by Jackie Guerrido (www.univision.com), national weather anchorwomen of Univision’s national morning show “Despierta America.”

The event will feature the screening of the film “Bella” (www.BellaTheMovie.com) on Thursday, Oct. 12. The lead actor, voted as one of the People’s 50 Most Beautiful 2006, Eduardo Verastegui, (www.eduardoverastegui.com.ar/idioma.htm) will make a special appearance. “Bella” recently won the top award at the Toronto Film Festival – the People’s Choice Award.

The corporate luncheon on Friday, Oct. 13 will be emceed by actress, producer and activist Lupe Ontiveros. Her recent role in “Desperate Housewives” made Lupe the only Latina nominated for an Emmy in 2005. The luncheon will honor three dynamic Latinas: Eva Longoria, Julie Stav and Maria Marin.

This year, State Farm Insurance Co., will present the conference honorary luncheon chair and international financial expert Julie Stav (www.JulieStav.com). She is the founder and owner of Retirement Benefit Systems. Maria Marin (www.mariamarin.com) will receive this year’s Latina Excellence Award for her successful career and contributions to the Hispanic Women’s Corporation.  She is considered one of the leading motivational trainers in the world on the subject of “Personal Empowerment” and “The Art of Negotiation. Qwest Communications is sponsoring the special appearance featuring the guest of honor and the Latina Visionary and Community Empowerment award recipient, actress Eva Longoria, star of the mega hit Desperate Housewives.

The conference also will host the “Dillard’s & LatinoFuture Fashion Show and Reception” on Friday, Oct. 13. The Fashion Show will showcase current styles and trends from national and international designers seen in Dillard’s stores across the nation.

A two-day Latina Art Walk and Cultural Exhibit will feature the talent of local Latino artists and painters, who include Mexican-American Lucia Madrid, Cuban Dora Hernandez and Puerto Rican Ed Dominguez.

Associate Director, Sundance Documentary Program

Primary Purpose of Position: Working closely with the Director and DFP staff, the Associate Director of the Documentary Film Program oversees the implementation and execution of all DFP activities, including Doc Fund and Doc Lab planning and follow-up, Festival support, partnership programming, travel internationally representing the SIDFP, web site content development, DFP writing and publications and developing new DFP initiatives. This position reports to the DFP Director, and oversees the DFP Manager and Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities
Documentary Film Program General:

  • Oversee DFP programs and operations
  • Collaborate with director on DFP programmatic endeavors
  • Oversee DFP website content development
  • Oversee activities involving SDF grantees and Doc Lab Fellows
  • Represent Sundance DFP to film community and general public
  • Work with Director to disseminate information on DFP programs to Institute staff
  • Work with Director and marketing and press departments to create press and marketing strategies for programs
  • Develop methods for reaching out to and supporting new members of the international documentary community
  • Travel as necessary to represent DFP

Sundance Documentary Fund:

  • Responsible for tracking and supporting needs of SDF grantees as designated by director in the following ways:  updates on film progress; review cuts and prepare notes for discussion/feedback for filmmaker on work in progress; advice and consultation on final edit; advice and consultation on marketing and distribution, festival strategies, national and international broadcast options, etc.
  • Review SDF submissions as designated by Director
  • Review SDF grantee interim and final narrative and financial reports as designated by director
  • Attend SDF committee meetings and review all docket projects
  • Work with director and SDF staff to create strategies to promote SDF(press, marketing)
  • Responsibilities as designated by Director for SDF publication/catalogue and exhibition series

House of Docs Program/Filmmaker Lodge:

  • Collaborate with Director and DFP staff on programming HOD panels and special events
  • Work with Institute departments to implement HOD program
  • Oversee programmatic effort of Filmmaker Lodge/House of Docs
  • Oversee all materials (web/marketing/press/program)
  • Work with Director to program works-in-progress (projects and advisors)
  • Work with Director on festival related activities in documentary area

Documentary International Programs/Initiatives:

  • Work with Director to determine strategic importance, interest and feasibility
  • Work with Director to program select collaborations
  • Oversee implementation of designated projects
  • Create with director and manage press and marketing strategies

Documentary Editing/Storytelling and Doc Composer Labs:

  • Work with director to identify eligible projects and advisors
  • Assist direct as needed with lab preparation and onsite during Lab

Knowledge, Skill, and Education
1. Employee is required to have authorization to work in the United States.
2. Extensive knowledge of documentary filmmaking and industry/market internationally
3. BA required, MA in media studies, international relations, related fields preferred
4. 2-5 years or more experience in documentary production, distribution/marketing, programming, funding and related areas
5. Knowledge of and interest in global issues and international film and ethnic/regional media traditions
6. 2-5 years experience with project management and logistics
7. Ability to work closely with international constituents and applicants (foreign languages preferred)
8. Must display excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
9. Ability to work closely with department staff and Institute staff
10. Ability to manage extensive database for applicant, proposal, and grant tracking purposes
11. Computer skills and computer software: access, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft word, excel

Problem Solving / Decision Making: Must have ability to judge quality and appropriateness of written and film components of project proposals.  Must be able to critically evaluate films and work closely with filmmakers from all over the world.  Must have keen sense of diplomacy and confidence in dealing with grantees and lab fellows (throughout the grant giving process and lab process).  Must be strategically focused and must be able to create and oversee programs, as well as develop creative solutions to challenges and opportunities that arise.  Must work well with others on staff, and must be able to address staffing and supervisory issues.
