NALIPsters at Sundance: Back by Popular Demand for January 2007
A MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY!

Attention, NALIPsters!

For a Third Year, NALIP invites members to apply for a special project of our Membership Development Fund: NALIPsters in Sundance 2007.
This program will co-sponsor up to four producers at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, first half -- January 18-22. NALIP will provide 50% of the cost of your condo, ticket pass, seminars and credentials. We will invite you to an orientation dinner, work with you on your Festival program, arrange for invitations to special events and parties, make the condo reservations, and help with your pass purchase. You pay the balance ($700 -$850/ producer depending on your choice of tickets/passes) plus arrange transportation to and from Park City, and give NALIP some volunteer time either in Sundance or at/before NALIP Conference 8.

Please don't miss this chance to attend the preeminent indie feature and documentary festival in the U.S. with fellow Latino/a makers, see what is being made & acquired, find out how your fellow indie makers produced their projects, meet funders and technical advisors, and drink 2% beer!

The Member Development Fund is a MATCHING FUND developed by NALIP's Board of Directors in order to help members execute projects for their professional development.

Here are the Details for this program:
1. NALIPsters in Sundance is Jan. 18-22, 2007. If selected, you are responsible for your transportation to Park City, Utah -- drive, or fly to Salt Lake City and take a shuttle up to Park City.
2. If selected, NALIP will pay 50% of the cost of your Condominium for 4 nights, double occupancy. We will also pay 50% of your ticket package and credentials or pass -- and you have options here. You can select (if available) the $750 pass that comes with access to everything, tickets to a lot of screenings, all of the parties and closing night Gala. You can select the $400 adrenaline pass that lets you in to any films before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., then buy individual tickets in January for other films. Or you can take your chances and register to buy tickets one by one in January, after the package people pick their tickets; I'll get you credentials every day to attend all the lounges and seminars.
3. If selected, you will meet with a NALIP Board or Staff member when you arrive, and then coordinate your 'attack' on the festival each day including screenings, seminars, networking opportunities, media lab and nearby SLAMDANCE.

Broad-based Coalition Mobilizes for FCC Hearings in Los Angeles

Events Taking Place October 3rd Are First Chance for Public to Testify on Media Consolidation.

LOS ANGELES - On Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, all five Federal Communications Commissioners will meet face-to-face with the public to discuss sweeping changes to the nation's media ownership rules.

The FCC public hearing will take place in two parts at two separate locations:

Tuesday, October 3

Part 1
1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
University of Southern California
Davidson Conference Center
Embassy Room
3415 South Figueroa Street
Los Angeles

Part 2
6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
El Segundo High School
640 Main Street
El Segundo

All five FCC Commissioners are expected to attend the hearings. Both events will feature an "open microphone" session for the public to offer testimony on a first-come, first-served basis.

A broad-based coalition of local and national groups is urging their members to attend the hearings and testify about the impacts of media consolidation. They include the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, California NOW, CALPIRG, Free Press, Media Alliance, MoveOn.org Civic Action, National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA, National Hispanic Media Coalition, Newspaper Guild-CWA, Prometheus Radio Project, local churches and many others.

"The change in media rules will impact every household in this country," added Alex Nogales, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. "The FCC needs to ensure diverse participation in the audience and that every Angeleno who wants to be heard on this issue gets the opportunity to voice his or her concerns."

On July 24, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin issued a Further Notice of Proposed Rule Making (FNPRM) that mentions no specific rule changes. But Martin has previously expressed his support for eliminating two key protections. One is the longstanding prohibition on "newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership," which prevents companies from owning a television or radio station and the major daily newspaper in most markets. The other is the local ownership cap that limits a company from owning more than one television station in most markets, or two in larger markets.

In 2003, Martin joined then-Chairman Michael Powell in voting to eliminate these very rules. In response, millions of people contacted the FCC and Congress to oppose the changes. The Senate voted to overturn the rules, which were later tossed out in federal court -- sending the FCC back to the drawing board.

The Los Angeles events are the first -- and so far the only -- public hearings scheduled, but Chairman Martin has pledged to hold "half a dozen" similar events nationwide "in diverse locations around the country to fully involve the American people." Unofficial hearings, attended by Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, have been held this year in Norfolk, Va.; Asheville, N.C.; Los Angeles; Milwaukee; and Austin, Texas.

This year, more than 100,000 public comments have been filed with the FCC about the media ownership rules. The final deadline for comments is Dec. 21. Local residents who can't attend a public hearing can file their comments to the FCC via the agency's Web site or at www.stopbigmedia.com.

Seeking Latino/a Co-Screenwriter and/or Dramaturge

I'm looking for a LATINO/A co-screenwriter and/or dramaturge to collaborate in the development of a screenplay with the working title of BARSTOW. The script is about a tightly-wound, racist Anglo ex-convict who gets out of jail and is unable to find work except with an entirely Hispanic construction crew. The story is of the friendship that develops between him and one of his co-workers. It will be a character-driven, gritty drama with an early 70's feel.

We'll be working with actors to develop character, incident, and dialogue through improv, in the style of Mike Leigh. This material will then be fashioned into a complete script. (I am also open to proposals from writers who are interested in a more traditional approach).

The story involves many native Spanish-speaking (from Mexico and Central America) characters. I am Anglo, and do speak some Spanish, but am interested in finding a partner who is fluent and more culturally familiar with the world of the Hispanic characters in the film.

About me: I am a director/writer currently living in Los Angeles. I have made several prize-winning short films, all of which have screened at a number of festivals, including Sundance, Telluride, and AFI Los Angeles among many others. My most recent short, PASSENGERS, is distributed by Shorts International, and has aired on the IFC and abroad. I have also worked as a screenwriter, most recently adapting Joe Pantoliano's memoir Who's Sorry Now for the screen for Holedigger Films (producers of The Secret Lives of Dentists and The Dying Gaul. BARSTOW will be my first feature film.

The film we will be working on will be low-to-no budget (part of the package is in place as I was just awarded a $60,000 Panavision camera rental as the first place prize in the 2006 Topanga Film festival). There will be a very nominal up-front payment, with meaningful back-end participation to whatever degree that becomes available. We may well not get rich on this film; this project is for someone who is hungry for their first feature credit and/or who is excited to be involved in a dynamic project and is therefore willing to take the financial risk of working at a close-to-spec rate. This film will get made, and, if we do good work, it will do well at festivals and have a good chance at an art-house release in the U.S. It will be the kind of film that one can be proud of and that will also open doors to subsequent projects.

If this sounds interesting to you, please email me at jtwalker65@aol.com. Please include a resume and, if you are a writer, a logline and synopsis of a sample script. PLEASE PASTE RESUME/LOGLINE/SYNOPIS INTO THE EMAIL rather than attaching them. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
