PBS Foundation and Skoll Foundation Establish Fund to Produce Unique Programming about Social Entrepreneurship
The PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund to Support New Work by Filmmakers, Journalists
Arlington, Va., and Palo Alto, Calif., September 20, 2006. The PBS Foundation and the Skoll Foundation announced today the establishment of the PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund, with a three-year, $2.5 million grant from the Skoll Foundation. The PBS Foundation will use the funds to enable filmmakers, documentarians and other journalists to produce work that promotes large-scale public awareness of social entrepreneurship, and highlights individuals who are pioneering innovative approaches that address far-reaching social issues.
The PBS Social Entrepreneurship Fund will provide independent producers with grants on a competitive basis to develop original content for dissemination by PBS across a variety of distribution platforms, such as full-length documentaries and independent films or shorter segments on PBS television programs, Web sites and digital services.
Each project supported by the fund may include an outreach initiative, determined by the applicant. This component could include community screenings, Web sites, podcasting and classroom materials, among other possibilities. Guidelines for applying for a PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund grant from PBS can be found at http://www.pbs.org/producers/funding.html.
PBS and its member stations provide the Skoll Foundation with an unparalleled opportunity to introduce social entrepreneurs and their compelling stories to millions of people on the air and online, said Sally Osberg, President and CEO of the Skoll Foundation. Social entrepreneurs and PBS share a special mission to inform and enlighten their publics and to bring to life stories that demonstrate how one person can make a difference. This partnership clearly supports that mission in a creative and collaborative manner. In fact, it is our hope that this partnership will be the impetus for many other collaborations, especially those between filmmakers and social entrepreneurs who can access this funding and extend the reach of their impact.
One of the top goals of the PBS Foundation is to help provide funding for new and interesting content that PBS can distribute to its member stations. The new PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund helps us achieve this goal, said Paula A. Kerger, President and CEO of PBS and a founding member of the PBS Foundation Board of Directors. It will give PBS the seed money it needs to begin working with content producers and help them explore the fascinating phenomenon of social entrepreneurship, which is reshaping communities across the world.
The PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund represents the most recent collaboration between public television and the Skoll Foundation. In 2005, the Skoll Foundation provided major funding for The New Heroes, an acclaimed four-hour documentary series that presented 12 compelling stories of social entrepreneurs who bring empowering solutions to the most intractable social problems around the world. Oregon Public Broadcasting, in association with Malone-Grove Productions, Inc., produced the series hosted by Robert Redford.
Our long-term plan is to make the PBS Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund part of a broader program venture fund that filmmakers, documentarians and journalists can tap when creating unique and innovative content. We want the PBS Foundation to support PBS’s role as a laboratory where independent producers and producing stations can explore the future of public media a forum where new ideas and concepts are tested in the pursuit of PBS mission to provide groundbreaking content that citizens will not find anywhere else, said Cheri M. Carter, Executive Director of the PBS Foundation.
The PBS Foundation, formed in 2004, has raised almost $17 million to date. The PBS Foundation focuses its fundraising efforts on creating an endowment, special initiatives and funding for programming and content.

The 10th International Latino Film Festival - San Francisco Bay Area is fast approaching and to celebrate our first double digit year we will be having a VERY SPECIAL Northern California Premiere screening at a VERY EXCLUSIVE venue.
On Friday, October 6th at 6:30pm the International Latino Film Society will be screening the Chilean blockbuster Mi mejor enemigo / My Favorite Enemy (Chile/Argentina, 2005) at the new state-of-the-art theater at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the San Francisco Presidio.
Invited guests from Chile director Alex Bowen and actor Nicolas Saavedra scheduled for Q&A session following the screening.

December 1978. Chile and Argentina are about to engage in an armed confrontation over ownership of three islands in the Beagle Canal on their southern border. In Patagonia, a Chilean platoon accidentally breaks its compass and they are lost on the immense pampas. They dig their trenches somewhere without knowing whether they are in Chile or Argentina. A long waiting begins that will be interrupted by an Argentinean platoon deployed in front of them. As both units await the start of the war, shared fear and a stray dog allow friendship to grow between “enemies”. Confused by the solitude of the pampas, the characters straddle the fragile line between duty and sentiment, telling a deeply human story with humor and dignity. This humanistic film is a timely and powerful message about the futility of war.

With the Sponsorship of Mia Maestro, "Chagas, A Hidden Affliction" to Screen at LALIFF

The screening will take place Saturday, October 7, 2006 with the presence and support of Mia Maestro (Tango, Frida, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Poseidon Adventure, and the TV series Alias).
"Chagas..." is about a disease that affects about 20 million people worldwide and kills an estimated 50,000 a year. Originally found only in poor, rural areas of Latin America, the deadly parasite has migrated to the developed countries.
The film shows why, according to many international health organizations, Chagas is a "forgotten disease", and how it is now found in Europe and the US, where there is no testing of donated blood or organs to screen for Chagas. One of the 4 Latino migrants that participated in the documentary was found to be infected.
The film has a web site and more information about Chagas at www.chagasthemovie.com
"Broken" to play at theLos Angeles Latino International Film Festival October 5-15, 2006.

"Broken" is a short film from NALIP members writer/director Alex Ferrari and writer/producer Jorge F. Rodriguez which has gotten international raves from festivals, fans and critics alike. Even the world's top film critic Roger Ebert had good things to say "BROKEN is essentially a demonstration of the mastery of horror imagery and techniques...effective and professional. Looking forward to BROKEN: The Feature." This short film has played in over 75 international film festivals.
EDITORS NOTE: There were some inaccuracies in a story we posted from "Documentary Magazine" about the 7th NALIP Conference. The first NALIP Conference in San Francisco, in June 1999, had 250 attendees. And the NALIP scholarship program for the Flaherty Fellowship in summer 2006 was for general membership, not students.
