Robert Greenwald, the director of last year’s wildly influential Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, has a new film from Brave New Films, “Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers,” to be released this October, and we want you to get involved in its premiere. NALIP Member Carla Gutierrez edited this film, and invites you to sponsor or attend a screening.

The film will expose the hidden truth of rampant profiteering in Iraq through the stories of soldiers, whistleblowers, survivors, and families of loved ones lost to corporate greed. “Iraq for Sale” can trigger a vital debate on our country’s priorities in Iraq just a few weeks before America votes.

This is a huge and unprecedented opportunity for us to have an impact, so NALIP encourages you to hold screenings on Saturday, October 14th, during an entire “Patriotism over Profit” week of screenings.

You have a chance to host one of these screening in your home, church, business, school, living room, or community center. Learn more and sign up here: http://iraqforsale.org/screenings.php?track=nalip

Artists and advocates are very excited by the impact it can have. The DVD is available for pre-order now (it ships late September) and you can support the film, Carla and the effort by ordering a copy, whether you are hosting a screening or not. Pre-order it for only $12.95: http://iraqforsale.org/buy.php?track=nalip

Help Choose the Winner of the 2006 Manhattan Short Film Festival
in San Antonio, TX

URBAN-15 Studios

2500 S. Presa St.
$7.50 Adult; $5 Students, Military & Seniors w/ID,
210.736.1500

For the third year, the URBAN-15 Group has united with The Manhattan Short Film Festival and over 80 other venues across Europe, Canada and the US, to create the world’s largest short film festival to be held throughout two continents this September.

Over the span of a week, venues from Russia to Ireland in Europe, four provinces in Canada along with 35 states will screen a selection of twelve short films that have made the cut into this prestigious event. In the past, the Festival’s finalists, who have gone on to win Oscars and move into the Hollywood mainstream, were judged by a celebrity panel which featured Susan Sarandon, Laura Linney, Eric Stoltz, Tim Robbins and a host of studio reps. This year, the Festival has thrown the judging out to audiences, who will be handed a voting card upon entry to each venue and asked to vote for their favorite film. Votes will be tallied and the winner announced in New York City’s Union Square Park on Sunday, September 23rd.

2006 Finalists  (Films are in order of how they will screen in the program)
1:    Last Night  (Ireland) – Director Conor Morrissey
2:     Cigarette Box (Poland) Director Tomek Matuszczak
3:    Farber’s Nerve (USA) Morgan Miller
4:    Lyra Lezama (Cuba) Clayton Haskell
5:    3rd Parent (USA) Christina Frenzel
6:    Without Seeing (Spain) Salvador Gómez Cuenca
INTERMISSION
7:    Hollywood Photos of Katie Mills (USA) Paul Tompkins
8:    Security (Germany) Lars Henning
9:    Who I Am What I Want? (UK) Chris Shepherd
10:    Serenade (AUSTRALIA) Kyle Blanshard
11:    Offside (Israel) Erez Tadmor & Guy Nattiv
12:    Mowing The Lawn (UK) Michael Bentham

The Manhattan Short Film Festival is growing in more ways than one. As technology advances and the medium of filmmaking becoming more readily available, the Festival is enriched by stories that might otherwise not be told. "When the festival first started back in 1997, the overwhelming majority of the shorts we received were from filmmakers who were based in major cities such as New York, LA or London," said Festival founding director Nicholas Mason. "Virtually every entry we got back then was shot on 35mm. Now with the evolution of digital filmmaking, filmmakers are shooting their stories and then editing and finishing their shorts on their home computers. We are now getting films from literally every corner of the world, so who better to judge them than a global audience."

A special Youth Media Screening is being offered for students of film and media from the San Antonio region on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The event will include a presentation of the twelve MSFF films and followed by a panel discussion of student and experienced media producers.

For more information visit the Festival’s website at www.MSfilmfest.com or www.urban15.org.

This event is supported by the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs, The Texas Commission on the Arts, The National Endowment of the Arts, American Sunrise, VuTURE ART and the generosity of Friends of URBAN-15.

SA48HR Film Experience
Are you ready for the experience?

Some 48 Hour Film events are projects. Some are even challenges. Welcome to a new kind of event - The San Antonio 48 Hour Film Experience. More than a project. More than a challenge.

Grab a camera, put a team together, and make a film in 48 hours.

Unlike most other 48 Hour Film events, the SA48HR Film Experience is a true test of a team's filmmakers. Limited to only ten (10) participating teams, each receives a genre, character, line of dialogue, and most importantly, a LOCATION. That's right, no props, but a location that must be used in the team's film. And what a location we have.

This year's SA48HR Film Experience will feature the beautiful Enchanted Springs Ranch Western Town. Main Street, the Judge Roy Bean office, the historic Spanish chapel, Old Town, and the Enchanted Springs Saloon are just a few of the period sets available at this visitor destination/movie set just a few miles west of downtown San Antonio. With more than 85 acres, filmmakers are sure to find the perfect location no matter what their film genre!

San Antonio's 48 Hour Film Experience is set to roll the weekend of October 3th, with a final screening (time and location to be determined).

So get your teams together, and check out the website at www.sa48hr.com for all the latest news.

Puerto Rico confirms 40 percent tax break
Jeremy Kay in Toronto 12 September 2006 04:00
The Puerto Rico Film Commission revealed full details of its 40% tax credit scheme at an official industry launch here yesterday.
The scheme, which is believed to be the second-largest in the world behind Manitoba's 65% facility, will offer a rebate of local spend on features, television productions, miniseries and soundtracks.
Qualifying productions will need to shoot 50% of principal photography in the Caribbean island and payments must be made to either a Puerto Rican company or resident.
There is no national content requirement, and indeed the Commission is planning to build a 25-30,000sq ft studio that will offer more to film-makers than an exotic backdrop.
Robert Zemeckis shot scenes from his drama Contact in Puerto Rico, and Commission executive director Luis Riefkohl confirmed that at least six features have shot in the island this year, including the crime dramas Illegal Tender, produced by John Singleton, and Reggaeton.
As a further incentive, professional fees will accrue towards the local spend, as will costs arising from training local crew during the shoot. Film-makers will also receive a 50% advance of the tax credit, and receive a hotel tax waiver during the shoot.
"We want to develop a local infrastructure and we have the goal of building this studio facility within the next two or three years," Riefkohl said.
Initially the Puerto Rico Treasury will cap its annual aggregate rebate at $15m, however US attorney Vinca Liane Jarrett, an active promoter of North American tax credits, said she expected the cap would be lifted.

Mis Queridos Compinches and Compinchas,

Como les va, Como les ha ido… mis disculpas, too long without writing.

Has anyone come up with a Spanglish spell checker? I know venture capitalists that may like to invest in something like this. And don’t try to sell me the fact that Word cambia de lengua upon demand… its like that silly rule of punctuating inside the quotes… [I said it before, say it again, pin… inventos de hombre blanco!] So forgive all the typos, no time to go back. And since we are in the forgiving mood, for those new to my ramblings, forgive the profanity. It is my duty to keep honest to my [and I just learned this word in a film] Logorrhea [look for it]. There is no broadcast of this newsletter, and no FCC rules could be broken. Don’t expect any politics, my status in this country forbids them from me.

Now, sorry again, for not rambling for a long time… time, the most precious commodity… there is not enough time… to play computer Spider, the less to write ramblings. Me? Ramping up to the next 6 months of heaviest work, so I didn’t want to pass this small low down to say hi too all of you.

As you know, or should, Hector Ceballos, Co-Editor and NALIP’s Webmaster, is the SOLE RESPONSIBLE compiler of the LITI Newsletter and is the acting editor of it. With each person in charge of that role, NALIP continues to outdo itself choosing the best replacement possible. He is handling it muy chin…, que no? Please, if you can, send him a note, so he knows how appreciative we all are. He hasn’t had that kind of experience that all his predecessors, including me, have had. Yo?, muy agradecido. OK, stop the self-flagellation, I find some of the news we quote. I still do… something.

You all guys should start reserving the dates and your centavitos (specially those East Costeños, remember that they may sponsor some of the travel expenses, specially if you volunteer) for the following BIG events coming up [Note to myself: Visit Optometrist… Oh Rambling! Rambling Alert!: Some of you know that between other manifestations of my ADD, there is the fact that I pursue, just pursue, other very disparate businesses, one of them being a Large Lodging Real Estate Development. And as with any industry, the hotel industry has the Conferences, Conventions, Seminars, Awards Shows, New Product Presentations (Premieres), etc, that the Entertainment Industry has, with a BIG letdown… Being the Old Man Club that it is, they don’t have even a the smallest of portions of the TACO DE OJO you have in one of our shows!- And that goes for all preferences… …so,… what were we talking about? Oh, yes, the BIG events…]:

The 10th Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (October 5-15, 2006), without a doubt, the foremost of Latino film festivals in the U.S.A., 10 days of heaven on Earth; The 8th NALIP National Conference (March 8-11, 2007), the big mama for best business learning, networking and motivating opportunity for Latinos in the Industry; and The NHMC’s 10th Impact Awards Gala (March, 2007), where all the c--- grandes get together for a show, dinner and cozy drinks afterwards; all worth every penny of the cost to get in, and remember, to get in free, you can always volunteer.

Big Logorrhea-tic Ending:
It is not how many billions we can buy; it is how many trillions we can sell…

Your Compinche Mayor,
Alex
